Racecourse groundstaff gather for
RCA event Delegates enjoy two day’s of seminars at York
AN enthusiastic group of Racecourse groundstaff gathered at York Racecourse on Monday 21 and Tuesday 22 November for a Race Course Association seminar.
With a focus on many issues of importance for Racecourse Groundstaff, including turfcare and racehorse welfare, the event attracted representatives from twenty-five different racecourses.
On Monday, delegates heard from a number of speakers, including an update on the BHA from Richard Linley and Peter Hobbs, about GPR and its use in shallow void protection, and utility mapping from Peter Webster and Colin Tickle of L&M Survey Services and UKSTT. Clerk of the Course at Nottingham and Market Rasen Racecourses, Sulekha Varma gave an overview of social media and life as ‘a twittering clerk’, whilst PJA representative Dale Gibson outlined the

jockeys’ perspective. Alan Lewis of the IOG informed delegates of future training and groundsman courses before delegates headed off to either Headingley or the Yara Laboratories in Pocklington.
Delegates enjoyed dinner at the Racecourse which followed happy hour at the bar, kindly sponsored by Duralock.
Tuesday saw William Derby and Kirkland Tellwright updating delegates on developments at York and Haydock Park Racecourses respectively, before Jayne Leyland and David Greenshields of Barenburg UK outlined their thoughts on grass selection for the modern racecourse. Sports Turf Design was addressed by Mike Harbridge of Professional Sports Turf Design (NW) Ltd.,
whilst RCA Veterinary Advisor, Simon Knapp, and Richard Reardon of the University of Glasgow informed delegates of Racecourse veterinary matters and research. The Seminar closed with Clerk of the Course at York Racecourse, William Derby, outlining the vital link between the Head Groundsman and Clerk of the Course.
