‘Bash the Trash’ Ben is rewarded for being a community champion

A YOUNG lad from Snodland has been rewarded for the great amount of work he does for his local community. Ben Kember (16), of Coombe Close, was presented with an Environmental Champion certifi- cate by the mayor of Tonbrige and Malling, Cllr Brian Luker. “Ben provides help in his local community and asks for no re- ward”, said the citation. “He in- volves himself in supporting activities with young people through to supporting the pen- sioners coffee morning. “He is always willing to give his

time for others and is particularly keen in keep- ing Snodland clean.” Ben has attended every Bash the Trash event

in the town, he has helped clear out the lake in Nevill Park and done litter picking in the park, Lee Road and Church Field. The scheme was launched by the borough council in 2009 and is to encourage more people to make an extra effort to improve the environ- ment. It is open to all residents in the borough and anybody can nominate a person to become an environmental champion.

we went there on holiday every year. “We talked about doing the

coast walk, but we never did so I decided to go on my own.” Wayne Chatfield said: “The

pair of them were more than neighbours, they were such good friends. To do it on his own was such a big ask I offered to go along.” The pair trained locally for four

to five months but it did not com- pare with what the Cornwall walk was like. They actually walked 287 miles over 15 days – a total of 100 hours. “My parents came with me

and I was so grateful to them,” said Stephen “I could not have done it without their support.” Sponsorship was raised from

family, friends, workmates and Sheila’s old colleagues from her workplace. Stephen works at Kings Hill Garage and his boss provided a van painted as Sheila’s Dream Walk. When all the money has been collected it will be split between Macmillan Nurses and the Heart of Kent Hospice. Stephen said it was “very emo- tional” when they walked past Sheila’s ashes at Lizard Penin- sular.

“She was larger than life,” he added. “When she walked into a room it would light up.”
