Irish Fly Fair

This was my first time to visit the Irish Fly Fair and to be honest I didn’t really know what to expect. Having been at all the outdoor shows to be indoors was a pleasure. I arrived to set up my stand on the Saturday morning as I live quite close to Galway and already with the mist clearing in the morning sun over Galway bay there was a real buzz about the place. This was the second year for the Irish Fly headed up by Steve Munn from Angling Classics and judging from the crowd they are certainly doing a great job. The doors opened at 10am and the crowds arrived. As you come in the doors you were greeted by over 60 fly tyres from all over the world. To see such a display was in itself a sight to behold but I wondered around talking to them I soon realised how freely they shared their knowledge and the passion they had. Some of the flies on display were a marvel of work- manship and a testament to the time and dedication that the creators invested in them.

As I came down stairs and entered the main hall I was greeted by stands upon stands of fly tying equipment everything you would ever need or even think you would need was there and there were deals to be had. Outside there was fantastic casting displays from Scott Mackenzie 3times world spey casting champion, Paddy Mc Donnell, Jim Hoy, Pat Hughes, Betty Hayes, Glenda Powell-Loop pro team & Emerald world maters ladies salmon champion, Hans-Ruedi Hebeisen- Pro fly fisher, world casting champion, Peter O’Reilly pro fly fisher and Hywel Morgan single hand rods world champion and of course is featured in our e-zine.

On the Saturday night we had an exhibitor's party and it was great to get to sit and have a chat with some of the other exhibitors. I had a great conversation with fly tyer Joe Mc Donald who told me about the first ever salmon fly. I also met fly tyer Lawrence Finney and I finally per- suaded him to write a monthly article for our e-zine. Here is a bit more information about Lawrence.
