Szymula’s hockey legacy living on through Tim’s Kids program Continued from Page 7
pucks, ice, and no pressure. As the kids progress, simple and fun ‘drills’ are added to keep them en- gaged and improving their skating skills.” While the organization began with the hockey
program, it has since evolved to include several other programs: Tim’s Kids Sled Hockey – which allows disabled athletes the opportunity to compete using special sleds and sticks with very few modifications to the rules; Tim’s Kids Special Hockey – which focuses on helping children with cognitive disabilities, such as autism, Down Syndrome and learning disabilities, enjoy the sport; and Friends for Life – a non-compet- itive cultural exchange with M&L Sports of Quebec, using ice hockey as the common interest.
18 The program has become so successful that the
NHL’s “Hockey Is For Everyone” program has joined as a key donor of equipment and the Statewide Ama- teur Hockey of Florida (SAHOF), RBC Bank and USA Space Alliance have become monetary donors. For Susan, the influx of support has been nearly
unbelievable.
“I’m both pleased and amazed because I never thought it would grow as quickly as it has,” she said. “I didn’t think it would get the attention of the NHL.” Still, for all the good the organization has provided
throughout the past 12 years, Susan is quick to point out that more can be done. “If we could get the volunteer help, I would love it
to be a continuing program, not just a 10-week pro- gram,” she said. “That way at the end of 10 weeks, you don’t have to leave and go pay your own way. We could be a recreation league of our own, paying the expenses of our players. “We’re a long way from that, but that’s where we’d
like to get some day.” For Ninko, no matter where the organization goes
from here and no matter what programs are added, the reason for so many people’s involvement will remain the same.
“These kids might not go very far in hockey, but
that’s never mattered,” Ninko said. “We do this be- cause it helps them and makes us all feel good.”
