Game, set and match for top carer Maggie!

TENNIS fan Maggie Town is a champion carer of old folk. She even missed her beloved Wimbledon fortnight to look after residents at Abbeyfield Greensted Care Home inWateringbury, where she works. Maggie, who lives in Maidstone, has just

won the inaugural Spirit of Abbeyfield Award for going above and beyond the call of duty. A spokesman for the Abbeyfield Kent charity said: “There were a lot of reasons why she won it. For instance, she started up a choir at the home in her own time, which has had a wonderful effect on the residents. “Last year, during the bad weather over winter, she slept at the home in case other people couldn’t get there to ensure resi- dents were cared for, and she regularly

Christmas event called off

THE ‘Search for the Christ Child’ event, a pop- ular Christmas Eve tradition in Detling, will not be held this year. Organisers said they regretted that it would

not go ahead, due to increased health and safety requirements and the current lack of suitable buildings in the village in which to perform. They thanked all who had supported the

event over many years. The village enactment attracted hundreds of people each year. It involved the crowd walking up The Street from St Martin’s Church, singing carols and being guided by angels and shep- herds to find the stable where Jesus has been born.

brings in flowers for residents at the home. “One particularly striking story was how

each year Maggie takes two weeks off so she can enjoy Wimbledon fortnight, but this year the home found itself short staffed and, despite having her annual leave booked and struggling with a bad back, Maggie came in to ensure the residents were cared for.” She was presented with the award at Abbeyfield Kent’s annual award ceremony, which recognises the long service and com- mitment of its staff. Maggie was chosen from 35 nominations

and was accompanied at the awards cere- mony by two of the Greensted residents.  Abbeyfield Kent provides care to 500 older people at 16 locations in Kent, in- cluding Tovil.
