School’s record-breaking results
YEAR 6 pupils at Sutton Valence Preparatory School celebrated their best ever results in the Kent 11+ test. Atotal of 46% of the year group passed – the Kent average is 25%
– with an average mark of 401, 11% better than the pass mark of 360.
The highest achievement came from four of the 22 pupils who
took the test, who all gained maximum points. They were:Michael Mahoney of Linton, Keiran Stephens of Kings Hill, Rebecca Mum- ford of Marden and Tamsin Potter of Headcorn. Head teacher Richard Johnson said: “Contrary to national con-
cerns about girls outperforming boys in exams, our results do not reflect this. “Indeed, this year, the top scores were achieved equally by boys
Apply now for primary places
PARENTS whose children are due to start primary school in September 2012 have until Monday, January 16, to apply for their pre- ferred schools. The easiest way to do so is online at

Paper talk DOWNS Mail pres- ident Dennis Fowle talked to St John Ambulance, Maid- stone, about his book ‘So I Started a Newspaper’.
Club owner goes into administration THE future of Maidstone nightclub Liquid & Envy is in doubt after its owners were forced into administration. Stephen Lynn, marketingmanager of Luminar, which
owns the Lockmeadow nightspot – one of the county town’s largest evening venues – confirmed the com- pany would be put in the hands of administrators fol- lowing a court hearing. He insists, however, that the club will remain open for the foreseeable future. Administrators are attempting to sell the company, which employs more than 2,000 people and owns 75 clubs across the country, as a going concern. The collapse of Luminar follows a number of failed attempts to find a buyer for the business and the refusal of its largest shareholder to back an equity fundraising proposal.
Dial casts sunny shadow PARISH council chair Eileen Riden ‘opened’ a sundial at the Bowhall Allot- ments Field in memory of Larry Mul- heirn, her predecessor, who died last year. His widow Margaret and family do-
nated the ‘human sundial’ to the parish. Collections made in Larry’s memory also contributed to the scheme. Eileen said Larry was a much-loved gentleman. As chairman, he had worked with energy and enthusiasm for the whole parish. He would have been delighted to see his little granddaughter with her parents on the new play area at theMemorial Fields, one of his ‘dreams schemes’ come true. Eileen hoped families and walkers would enjoy the wonderful peaceful set- ting of the sundial and have fun trying to find out how it all worked. “Sun- shine is the secret!” she added. Larry’s son, Ian, thanked the parish council and all those involved in the proj- ect, especially Lyndon and Sue Davies.
