STARPACKS 2010 Keith Barnes, Chairman of the of The Packaging Society, discusses the Starpack 2010 award winners and also looks at the future of the packaging industry.


Once again I am pleased to


be asked to bring you news of the 2010 Starpack awards. I asked last year whether it could get any better and I wasn’t dis- appointed. Our new Competi- tions Working group under the able Chairmanship of Alec Alden worked tirelessly with the invaluable help of Rachel Brooks at the Packaging Society to achieve another successful year.

efore I comment on the winners I must thank Barry Jones, Chairman of the London and South East local Packaging Society, for ac- commodating our awards cere- mony within his prestigious London Dinner. This is a charita- ble event sponsored by our good friends at Marks & Spencers with proceeds going to CLIC Sargent. Also I must


mention and thank The Drinks Report ably controlled by Felic- ity Murray who helped us throughout 2010.


Now for the Winners - There is no doubt that Crown Bevcan are at the top for their full aperture can enabling the user to drink more easily from the can. As well as a Gold star in the Alcoholic Beverages cate- gory they also received the Starpack Champion award sup- ported by Packology. In the Con- sumer category Crown won again for the innovative use of a meta box to house the Bosch IXO4 Cordless Power Tool. Look- ing at Decoration Diageo pro- vided a stunning centenary pack for Old Parr Superior Whisky. The metallised glass bottle produced by Owens Illi- nois is truly amazing. Under the Environment
