Family’s distress after pet savaged ‘like a toy’

A FAMILY has been devastated by the loss of their pet cat, which was savaged by a dog outside their home. Mum-of two Kirsty Newton said the Stafford-

shire terrier-type dog snatched up her eight- month-old cat, George, and shook him like a toy. Neighbours at Farleigh Court, in Farleigh Lane, Barming, were woken by the commotion at around 11.45pm on the footpath outside their flats.

Kirsty said: “The noise was horrific. The cat

was screaming and his injuries were terrible. A neighbour grabbed the dog but it was too late.” The cat was rushed to a vet for emergency treat-

ment but was so badly injured that he had to be put to sleep. “It was very distressing, “said Kirsty, who has

two daughters – four-year-old Amber and Han- nah, aged eightmonths. “George was an amazing cat. Everyone knew him – he was very gentle and affectionate. He was just torn to bits like one of those dog toys. “It’s not just a cat. If you have a pet, it’s part of

the family. Amber was very close to George and she really misses him. “The man just ran off and left the dog there be-

cause he knew the police had been called. He has not tried to apologise and we have heard nothing from him since.” Police said they were investigating the incident

but had been unable to trace the man, who is thought to live nearby. Kirsty warned other residents to be on their

guard as the man had another similar terrierwith him on a lead when the other dog attacked. A Kent Police spokesman said: “We are cur- rently investigating the circumstances but as yet
