Dear Editor: Thank you very much for giving front-page attention to

Save Our Sites’ 2011 List of Endangered Site in the October 19th copy of the Weekly Press. (See quote below).

As resident of Powelton, I do have two corrections: 1- 3619 Baring Street was purchased in September by a

couple who will live there. Work has begun on repairs as can be seen from the scaffolding along 37th Street.

2- The last sentence in the blurb on 3619 Baring Street calls Powelton Village a “deteriorating neighborhood.” Powelton Village is anything but, and I ask you to withdraw this inac- curate description. Anyone who attended the October 1st House and Garden Tour could see all the work being done by numerous owners. Our community garden thrives with beautiful plantings and handsome brick and iron fencing. Art galleries are opening on Lancaster Avenue, and we share the restaurant renaissance of the rest of University City. We have a very strong civic association. We continue to plant numerous trees, and work to improve our Tot Lot and public schools. We benefit from the services of the University City District and unmatched public transportation. And we work cooperatively with Drexel University on such improvements as Drexel Park and the West Bank Greenway, which can be enjoyed by all. “Deteriorating”? -- I think just the opposite is true.

Best regards, Robert Thomas

From the Editor, We most repently “withdraw” this obvious mischaracterization. And we have passed your letter on to David Traub who’s response is below. We will publishe the second part og the SOS list nes week. -RC

Subject: Re: Correction about 3619 Baring

Street and Powelton Village Bob:

Thanks for forwarding this letter from Bob Thomas to us.

As regards his point No. 1: what happens sometimes is that after sites/buildings are nom- inated by our members, in this case last April 2011, repairs or renovations, unbeknownst, to us are begun. That fortunately seems to have happened in this instance. In some cases, maybe not this one, repairs are inadequately or insufficiently done, rendering the building still “endangered.”

As regards point No. 2, Bob is absolutely cor-

rect that Powelton Village is not a deteriorating neighborhood, and we apologize profusely for that inadvertent desription that slipped by our proofreaders.

Again thank you so much for publishing the

list. We have received much praise for it from many people throughtout the city..

Best regards and wishes David
