To the Editor: This is a very sincere request for my
union brothers and sisters who may have voted down the (first) proposed PS&T contract offer. Please think about this: My name is James B. Calfa. I am 60
years of age with only a little more than 22 years of service with the state Transportation Department as an engineering technician (salary grade 8). Now, Gov. Andrew Cuomo wants to lay
me off, thinking he can balance the state budget starting with my pay. To date, my pay rate is exactly $38,091.
With this salary, I pay all of my bills, own a house (with taxes and flood insurance) and all the utilities that come with it (LIPA Electric, Suffolk County water, propane gas, cablevision and fuel oil to heat my house and water). I have two children in school, a boy, 10,
and a girl, 13. My children attend school in theWilliam Floyd School District. Because of the recent school budget vote, my school district taxes have increased more than 12 percent.
My wife does her best to help by
working two nights a week at a local movie theater. Her salary barely pays for the gas she uses to travel to and from her job. I use my vehicle on my job as a field
inspector with DOT construction. I average close to 3,000 miles per month and I am very busy with my work. I have been a PEF steward for six
years and I have attended at least four PEF conventions. I believe in my union and really would like to think our members will reconsider their votes, so I donʼt lose my job. I always supported the nurses by rallying with them on their lobby day in Albany until they got what they needed. Now, I need the same support. Please
vote “Yes” now.

drug copay? United Health Care (UHC)/Medco,
the prescription drug insurer/administrator for the Empire Plan, charged incorrect copayments for PEF enrollees who filled brand-name prescriptions from October 1 to 4. Copays for generic prescriptions were not affected. UHC/Medco kept track of
enrollees who were incorrectly charged the higher copay and will automatically issue a refund in November. Even members who paid by credit
card will receive a check, rather than a credit back to their cards. If you expect a refund and haven’t
