Heart walk exceeds goal, raises more heart-healthy awareness

On a drizzly, blustery October 1, PEF

President Ken Brynien addressed a crowd of nearly 2,000 at The Crossings of Colonie who gathered for the 2011 Capital Region Heart Walk. The American Heart Association (AHA) event raised $282,538, about $35,000 more than its goal. Brynien, this year’s heart walk

chairperson, said, “By being here today, you are taking steps to live a healthy life and helping the AHA achieve its 2020 goal. That goal is to improve the cardiovascular health of all Americans by 20 percent and reduce death from heart disease and stroke by 20 percent. “Nearly 40 percent of Americans consider

themselves to be in ideal health, but fewer than 1 percent actually meet the AHA’s criteria for ideal health.” Brynien said heart disease can be

prevented by walking and being physically active. He also said PEF especially recognizes the

importance of a healthy heart, since it lost PEF Vice President Lou Matrazzo to heart disease in March 2009. After the opening remarks by Brynien,

dozens of people—small children to the elderly—waved red caps in the air, as a sign they survived heart disease. Many finished the three-mile walk, including Brynien. Near the end of the trek, participants were

given golden pinwheels. When they reached the finish line, the pinwheels were placed in the ground, forming a garden, while a bagpiper played.
