Developing an international maritime centre

In 2010, the Port of Singapore showed strong growth in all areas - vessel arrival tonnage, container throughput, cargo throughput and bunker sales. In particular, vessel arrival tonnage and bunker sales in 2010 were both at record high levels and we retained our leading positions as the world's busiest port by vessel arrival tonnage and the world's top bunkering port. The Singapore Registry of Ships continued to grow, crossing the 48m gt mark at the end of last year. The Maritime and PortAuthority of Singapore

(MPA) is committed to working closely with the industry to ensure that the Port of Singapore continues to offer safe, efficient and reliable and competitive marine and port services. In addition, we formulated a five year Maritime Manpower Development Plan to build Singapore's maritime manpower capabilities and strengthen maritime

education and training.MPA also committed $200m to promote maritime research, education and training by setting up the Singapore Maritime Institute. This was done in partnership with the Agency for Science,Technology and Research (A*STAR), the Economic Development Board (EDB) and tertiary institutions. The 5th Singapore MaritimeWeek was

successfully organised inApril 2010 with a total of 26 events, up from the 21 events in the previous year. For 2010, there was an added focus on outreach programmes to raise public awareness of the maritime sector. Singapore will once again play host to an international gathering of leading maritime personalities during the 6th Singapore MaritimeWeek from 10 to 15April 2011. Since MPA was formed on 2 February 1996, the

Singapore maritime landscape has evolved and grown, and this was made possible by the dynamic partnerships that we have with the industry, the unions, the academic and research institutions, and international partners. As we celebrate our achievements on our 15th

anniversary,MPA remains committed to developing and promoting Singapore as a premier global hub port, an international maritime centre, and to advance and safeguard Singapore’s strategic maritime interests.
