Cat base for Headcorn DAPHNE Harris has applied for retrospective planning permission to erect 12 temporary cat pens for a period of three years at Headcorn. The cattery, in a garden atWest

View Cottages inMaidstone Road, is operated on a charitable basis for the RSPCA and has been taking in stray and unwanted cats until homes are found. The planning statement added:

“The intention is for the RSPCA to purchase land and construct a per- manent purpose-built cattery but until such time as funds become available for this, the building at West View Cottages is heavily re- lied upon as a temporary home for cats.”

by nursery nurse Margaret King, the branch secretary of Unison. The maternity department has since been transferred to Pembury, near TunbridgeWells. Natasha said: “Everything was straightfor-

ward and the staff were very helpful. I’m sad to see this unit go but am looking forward to see- ing the new one at Tunbridge Wells Hospital later on.”

Politicians round on development at J8 THERE is a unified political groundswell against proposed new development on M20 junc- tion 8, according to KCC member Cllr Jenny Whittle. Maidstone Council’s draft Core Strategy, which has been out for consultation, recommends

the area to accommodate around 11 hectares of employment land. But Cllr Whittle says local county and borough councillors, as well as MP Hugh Robert-

son, are vehemently against the idea. She said: “I want to protect the area from creeping de- velopment and increased traffic problems in nearby villages like Leeds, Broomfield and Ulcombe. Eleven hectares could easily turn into much more. If J8 is developed, the possibil- ity of getting the KIG land [north of Bearsted] earmarked as an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty will be weakened.”

MYSTERY surrounds the sudden closure of the well-used hand car wash in Ashford Road, just to the west of J8. Cllr Whittle said it was a hot topic at Thurnham Parish Council.

Search is on for community orchard site

VILLAGERS at Hunton are hoping to locate a suitable area for a community orchard which has been proposed in the parish plan. The parish council agreed

that waste land behind the bowls club would make a good site, with no cost in- volved as it was part of the playing field.

A new committee had been formed by the parish plan steering group with Annette Trought as chairman and Judi Arnold as secretary. Groups had been set up to action dif- ferent elements of the plan, chaired by Guy Oliver (Speed- watch), Di Martin (litter) and Mike Summersgill (recycling and sustainability).

Outgoing chairman Sue Heaton and secretary Barbara Wright were thanked for their hard work in producing the parish plan that had drawn compliments from the bor- ough council on its profes- sionalism. A community pack is also

being produced for people moving into the village.
