UNDER GROUND AND ALL OVER GROUND

In true form for Norwich Arts Centre, their October calendar covers much earthly ground, and still manages to take a peek at the denizens of activity on the underground theme. They bring you Ghanaian sounds from Atongo Zimba on Thurs 6th Oct, described by Mondomix Magazine as “Beautiful, inspiring music”. Atongo Zimba was born in the savannahs of northern Ghana. His grandfather taught him how to play the koliko or molo – a two stringed calabash lute - at a very young age. He now brings music from his previous three European releases and brand new CD, ‘Sankuune’ via Holland - where his record label is based - which marks a return to Atongo’s acoustic roots. Going underground, NAC welcomes The Covert Club on Fri 21st Oct presented by Headless Entertainment and Hocus Pocus Theatre. The organisers say “Think of entering an underground world of new-found satire cabaret and a new social movement. Think of a young Marlene Dietrich performing her first few gigs in a basement bar.” Featuring live music, new performance, cocktails and good company. Everyone’s invited… or are they? STYX STILL ROCKING

Norwich's longest running studio, Styx studio has been established for 15 years, or even longer if you count when Styx residents Steve and Gary were on Ber Street! Nowadays, they have three resident artists: Steve 'the Joker' Coulson, Gary 'Radar' Way, Mik 'Inked Mik' Oliver, who are used to catering for all your tattoo requirements whether it’s your first ever tattoo or you’re planning a full body suit. There’s a wide selection of flash designs to inspire you and the team loves custom work; everything from dot work to old school. All body modifications from a tongue split to an ear lobe piercing and everything in between are also catered for. After all these years, Styx have also diversified and offer laser removal for tattoos, so they can lighten up tattoos for more cover up options or even take them off completely! For further details call us at the shop 01603 667511 or find them on Facebook..

DAISY & LOLA IS MOVING IN!

Daisy & Lola, the little vintage boutique we’ve used any excuse to visit over their two years of being open, is hitchin’ skirt and moving to St Benedict’s St! The shop, named after two adorable VIPooches, has been the go-to for everyone in Norwich looking for a glammed up look with “a pin-up twist”, and it will continue to be as it moves just down the road to Norwich’s other most vibrant street, St Benedicts, into the haven where we currently find Aunty Nana’s. Like the most loveable of housemates, Daisy & Lola are moving in with Aunty Nana’s, bringing vintage fashion, furniture, gifts, cards and crockery all under the same dainty little roof. There will be the same extensive range, plus Daisy & Lola will be welcoming autumn in with a new range of knitwear and some brand new Rayon dresses from the ever- popular Collectif. Those will sit alongside favourite labels, Vivien of Holloway, Tara Starlet, Freddies of Pinewood and more. With events like Bo Nanafana and the Hemsby Rock ‘n’ Roll Weekender coming up, go and get kitted out there from Oct 1st, but don’t you dare forget your credit card!

LET’S HEAR IT FOR BEER

Beer is good. We’re not usually ones to proffer such direct statements, but we know that you and hundreds of people who attend the Norwich Beer Festival every year won’t argue with our sentiment. CAMRA, the Campaign for Real Ale, sees in its 34th annual Beer Festival, and Norwich braces itself for an influx of ale suppers that max out St Andrew’s Hall’s capacity every year. The Beer Festival doesn’t need any help in promoting the event, which sees sprawling queues winding down the street every year, patiently waiting for the chance to sample one of over 200 cask-conditioned real ales, but it’s worthwhile mentioning that it’s a good time to support all your local real ale establishments while the festival is on. Pubs like The Murderers, the Fat Cat and the Fat Cat Tap, The Rumsey Wells and many more fly the flag all year round.
