of you this season, and value your feed- back and support as we embark on mak- ing Colorado Rubber Magazine a valued staple in the local hockey community.

Former NHL forward Derek Arm-

strong has joined the Boulder Jr. Bison of the Western States Hockey League (WSHL) as an assistant coach. Armstrong played the majority of his NHL career with the Los Angeles

Kings and was also the MVP of the American Hockey League (AHL) in 2001. “Having the experience, leadership and pure passion for the game of

hockey that Army has is absolutely an irreplaceable component to our team,” said Jr. Bison head coach Brent Cullaton. “The most amazing quality is the person he is and the attitude and compassion he has towards the players. “Army had a very successful career in the NHL, but he worked ex-

tremely hard to get there and overcame a lot of adversity in doing so. I think our players see how hard he competes and it inspires them to find that extra gear.” Formerly a USA Hockey Tier III Junior A league, the WSHL is now

sanctioned by the Amateur Athletic Union. Richard Forman, head coach of the Arvada Hockey Association’s

Bantam B team, is featured in a television commercial as a spokesman for prostate cancer and his successful treatment. Coaching at Arvada for over 20 years, Forman was diagnosed with

prostate cancer last year and, after treatment through the Urology Center of Colorado in Denver, he’s on the road to a clean, healthy recovery.

Brian Carter, a member of the Foothills Flyers’ Pee Wee B team, is

going to be skating with the Colorado Avalanche later this month. Seriously. Carter was selected as the Avalanche Youth Skater for the Avs game

on Sunday, Oct. 30, against the Kings. The Avalanche is offering special ticket pricing for the game as well. Check out FoothillsHockey.org for more information.

Talk about hometown pride. Austin Levi played his first three years with the Plymouth (Mich.)

Whalers of the Ontario Hockey League calling Farmington Hills, Mich., his hometown. Granted, that’s where he and his family reside now, but this season,

the Carolina Hurricanes draft pick sports a different allegiance in the game program: Hometown - Aurora, CO. “I was born in Columbus (Ohio) and spent 10 years in Colorado,” Levi

explained. “We moved (to Michigan) when I was 14. I consider Aurora my hometown because that’s when I started playing the game and learned to love it.” The Avalanche drafted Garrett Meurs, Levi’s teammate with the

Whalers, in the fifth round of June’s NHL Entry Draft. Contact Matt Mackinder at matt@rubberhockey.com
