realistic technique for over 10 years. I sand down my canvas to an almost mirror like surface, to ensure the smooth application of paint or charcoal. I start with a very fine outline drawing. I then block in the basic shades with willow charcoal, erasing highlights with a putty rubber. This area is then fixed before I apply white pastel in the highlighted area which again is then fixed. Next I begin to work in the supracolour pencils, which are ultra fine hard pencils. Again I work from dark to light, building up details from left to right across the pastel paper, which I buy exclusively from a specialist paper manufacturer in France. Another invaluable implement is a rubber tipped colour blender which is excellent for creating the right shade to highlight a detail or produce a specific tone.
