his is the second edition of the SMM Green Shipping Guide, following its first publication in 2010. Our aim in this follow-up edition after just one year is to keep green technologies at the centre of continuous interest and attention, not only in the “even” years when SMM is held, but also in non-SMM years, because this subject is so vital for the whole of the shipbuilding industry and for shipping worldwide. The SMM Green Shipping Guide is published by Hamburg Messe und Congress (HMC) as the organiser of the SMM shipbuilding, machinery and marine technology international trade fair Hamburg, in cooperation with Seatrade. It includes Asia, it reports on the current state-of-the-art innovation, and it gives some advance information on gmec 2012. That


includes the provisional programme for gmec 2012, the two-day global maritime environmental congress, which will be a key event at the upcoming SMM. The conference will address greenhouse gas emissions, a major subject at gmec, particularly for merchant shipping, and will also include a number of workshops.


SMM 2012 will be a showcase for green technologies and solutions provided by the shipbuilding industry for offshore wind energy, and for other innovations. SMM 2012 will set new international standards with more than 2,000 exhibitors from over 60 countries, with numerous national pavilions, and with accompanying conferences, symposia and workshops. Some 50,000 trade visitors from all parts of the world are expected at the largest shipbuilding fair, to be

s the Secretary General of the Asian Shipowners’ Forum (ASF), it gives me great


pleasure and honour to congratulate Seatrade and SMM for the successful publication of the SMM Green Shipping Guide 2011. This publication well encompassed the current green developments in shipping as well as the prospective developments that will shape the future of shipping.


It is well known that more than 90% of the world’s trade is carried by international shipping industry. According to World Trade Organisation (WTO), approximately 30% to 32% of the world’s trade in 2010 is attributed to Asia, which is next to 38% to 39% generated by Europe. However, in terms of annual increases, Asia’s trade volume increased by 31% to 32% from that of 2009 where as Europe achieved an increase of 12% to 13% in the same period. As world trade and particularly


Asian trade continue to grow, we can expect Asian shipping to gain increasing importance.


ASF consists of eight national shipowner’ association members, representing the interests of shipowners from ASEAN, Australia, China, Chinese Taipei, Hong Kong, India, Japan and Korea; out of which three are members of OECD, two are members of BRIC and three are members from economically well developed and growing countries or regions.


Representing a large proportion of Asia’s shipping sector, ASF recognises its role in ensuring environmentally responsible and sustainable shipping activities. Therefore, ASF has been monitoring issues such as tackling climate change through the reduction in carbon emissions, pollution prevention as well as green and safer ship recycling.


Shipping is already the most energy efficient means of cargo


transport and ASF is aiming for every possible endeavour to achieve greener and more environmentally friendly shipping.
