Ballast water treatment systems

recycle the disinfection unit after 20,000 hours or so, through an after-sales service agreement. Various optional extras are also available. Type approval for the Mark II is expected by the end of September, says Eiken.

PureBallast developed by Alfa Laval and supported by Sweden's Wallenius Lines, is a chemical-free system, producing radicals that neutralise organisms in ballast water. Its manufacturers claim that it is the most sold and operated system in use today and

is now available in a less power- hungry second generation range. Alfa Laval says the system is easy to use, easy to install, easy to operate and harmless to ballast tank coatings and crew. The system is compact and flexible, and therefore well-suited to cramped engine room spaces. Its modular design provides a wide capacity range. One of the first systems to receive IMO type approval, a prototype was originally installed on board the Wallenius car carrier Don Quijote in 2003.

Unitor BWTS is marketed by Wilhelmsen Technical Solutions (WTS) and uses technology provided by Resource Ballast Technologies to supply flexible and economic units for both retrofit and newbuilding, WTS claims. The system is based on the combined effects of cavitation, sterilisation and filtration and provides effective operation in all water conditions across the full salinity range. Three units are being installed on general purpose cargo vessels under constrution in China whilst two more are being fitted on board new Chinese-built asphalt carriers for Singapore-based Stolt Bitumen Services. WTS has also secured contracts for Unitor BWTS installations on board PCTCs, LNG carriers, passenger ferries and bulk carriers. System capacities range form 100cu mtr/h to 4,000cu mtr/h per ballast pump. However, pumps can be installed in parallel to provide greater capacities. 

Other type-approved systems include NEI Treatment Systems, Nutech 03/NK Co, OptiMarin, Panasia and Techcross.
