The Sports Dock is not the only addition to the University of East London’s facilities and the institution’s Stratford Campus will soon boast a new library with space for 130,000 books. Designed by Hopkins Architects, the proposed three-storey

building will cost around £9.5 million and work should start on site before the end of 2011. A fleet of other consultants have also been appointed, including Turner & Townsend as cost consultants, Aecom to provide mechanical and electrical advice and King Sturge as project managers. The London Borough of Newham have approved a detailed

planning application and the project team have again targeted a BREEAM ‘Excellent’ rating for the 4,000 sq m library, which is scheduled to open in early 2013.

situ concrete would have taken far too long,” adds Codd – with the team still working on the design as work progressed. “Because it’s design and build, the whole process of design is

ongoing,” adds Batten. “On D&B, a builder almost starts dig- ging before he knows what he’s digging the hole for.” The steel frame was being put together off-site by West Sussex-

based specialist Graham Wood Structural, while piles were being driven. The frame went up in early 2011 and the walls will be clad with a mixture of glass cladding, render and cedar cladding and two areas of green roofing adjacent to the DLR. The sedum roof will contribute towards achieving a BREEAM

rating of ‘Excellent’, which has been written into Denne’s con- tract. To achieve ‘Excellent’, the project needs 20 per cent of its energy from renewable sources and this has seen 100 sq m of photovoltaic panels specified along with a pellet-fed biomass boiler, while the proximity of the DLR will automatically boost the transport section of the BREEAM score. The entire project will cost £20 million with Denne’s D&B

contract valued at between £13 million and £14 million and on completion, the Sports Dock will be open seven days a week, 362 days a year from 6.30am to 10.30pm, On March 11 this year, a time capsule was placed beneath the

foundations to be reopened in 2061. Included in it were 10 images drawn by pupils from Drew Primary School, who were asked to come up with illustrations based on the themes of com- munity, sport and the Olympics. Among the pictures was one of Usain Bolt. The Jamaican World 100-metres record holder will be hoping that none of the likely US visi- tors to the Sports Dock, such as Walter Dix, Tyson Gay and Mike Rogers, will find sufficient inspi- ration to deny him gold at London 2012.
