2010, Kent-based Denne edged out a host of other leading con- tractors, including BAM Construct, Barr, Shepherd and Wates, to a design and build deal for the project. Denne’s construction manager on the scheme, Trevor Codd,
says: “They couldn’t have got everything together for a tradi- tional contract in time to open for March 2012. In order to deliver it within that time frame, they had to go for D&B. “The biggest issue for us is the time frame. You get awarded a
contract that is a concept and it’s how you manage your design and construction simultaneously – that’s the biggest challenge.” UEL did not novate Clague, which the university and Ball
Hall hired to draw up the preliminary design. When this was put out to tender, Clague asked a couple of bidders if they were will-
ing to work with the practice. Denne had worked successfully with them before and agreed. With the design and build deal sealed by Denne, Clague remained on the job. A start on site was not officially made until September 6 2010,
when a range of sporting stars were assembled for an official cer- emony to ‘turn the first turf ’. The gamut of sports represented was fitting as the Sports
Dock will cater for a wide range of athletes and sports both dur- ing the Olympics and after 2012, as the project is a key plank in UEL’s long-term strategy. “Our goal is for UEL to be recognised as the number one university for sport in London,” explains vice chancellor Professor Patrick McGhee.
