A new Chinese porcelain record – in West Ruislip

PROOFED:

Left: the record-breaking Ruislip yang cai, distinctive for its reticulated double-walled construction, combines various differing decorative elements in a manner typical of Tang Ying’s directorship of the Imperial manufactory at Jingdezhen during the early years of the reign of the Qianlong emperor – a period of remarkable technical achievement.

CHISWICK Auctions are set to sell one of the most important early paintings by the German Expressionist Ludwig Meidner (1884-1966) to have come to market in recent years.

The authenticity of the painting,

which slipped through the hands of both Sotheby’s and Christie’s, has recently been confirmed after months of research led by the West London auctioneers under the guidance of the leading academic in the field. It is estimated to fetch £800,000-£1.2m on September 28.

from November 1912, the key moment in his artistic development, which marked a radical change in style and occasioned the name-making series of paintings dubbed the Apocalyptic Landscapes that anticipated the horrors of the Great War. The 2ft 6in x 2ft (75 x 60cm) painting, provisionally titled The Miners, depicts the growing unrest that spread among the coal miners of Eastern Prussia and Poland in the spring and sum fmer of 1912, provoking the Prussian Government to announce that the strikers would be “suppressed with an iron hand”. Several clues have helped confirm

the identity of the painting. Both carbon dating and pigment analysis conducted by the London specialists Art Access and Research at a cost of £4000 (not an insignificant outlay for a local auction room) dated the painting to around 1910, which discounted the possibility that it was a recent forgery.

leading dealers and collectors, it is the best object of its type to be seen on the market in decades, but it also chimes perfectly with current Chinese taste that values pieces from this period above all others. Peter Bainbridge, the

It is the perfect expression of current Chinese taste with a recent exhibition at the National Palace Museum, Taipei titled Stunning Decorative Porcelains from the Ch’ien-lung Reign focusing upon a number of pieces of this type in the collection. Quite how an

imperial masterpiece reached Middlesex is unknown but it probably left China soon after the end of the Second Opium War in 1860 when the Summer Palace was sacked by British troops. It had been acquired in the 1930s by the late uncle of the vendor who lived in a bungalow in Pinner, North West

London. The vendor had no knowledge of
