1. This plaster relief for the head of Queen Elizabeth II was used in the production of the definitive series of British postage stamps by Arnold Machin (1911-1999). The 17 x 18in (42 x 46cm) piece was presented 40 years ago to the manager of the British Philatelic Bureau by the director of the Post Office in Scotland following the Edinburgh press launch of the regional definitive stamps. It will go under the hammer at Shapes Auctioneers in Edinburgh on October 1 with an estimate of £10,000-15,000. Contact 0131 453 3222

2. Brightwells of Leominster will offer Caughley porcelain from the collection of Ronald and Joan Sillito at their sale on September 28. Included in the collection is a part coffee set, tea bowls and saucers, platters and jugs in several sizes and some pieces

from a polychrome teaset, most of which will be offered as separate lots. Pictured here is a 3½in (8.8cm) Caughley blue and white pounce pot printed with a stalked apple pattern which appeared in the Caughley Bicentenary Exhibition in 1999. Estimate £1000-2000. Contact 01568 611122

3. On September 24, Whyte’s of Dublin will offer this Irish round tower model by Martin McGuinness, Deputy First Minister of Northern Ireland, while he was a prisoner in Portlaoise Jail. He spent time in the prison after he was convicted of being a member of the IRA in February 1974 by the Special Criminal Court in Dublin. Inscribed on a wooden base To Fr. Jimmy from Martin Portlaoise Jail 1974, the 13 x 16in (33 x 15cm) is estimated at €1000-1500. Contact +353 (0)1 676 2888

4. Early oak specialists Wilkinson’s will offer a George II mahogany bookcase attributed to William Hallett (1707-1781) at their sale on October 2. The split pediment is carved with acanthus leaves whilst the moulded arch below is decorated with beading and foliate scroll work. Measuring 6ft 5in (1.97m) x 3ft 6in (1.07m), it is estimated at £6000-8000. Contact 01302 814884

5. The first 400 lots featured in specialist tool auctioneers David Stanley’s sale on September 24 can be found in David Russell’s book Antique Woodworking Tools: Their Craftsmanship from the Earliest Times to the Twentieth Century. Amassed over a 40-year period by David Russell, the vast collection will be dispersed by the auction house across four sales held at the Hermitage Leisure Centre in Whitwick, Leicestershire.
A highlight from this sale is the little- used steel Norris no 11 mitre plane, seen here, measuring 10¾ x 3¼in (25.4 x 7.6cm), with rosewood infill and snecked iron by Ward. Estimate £8000-12000. Contact 01530 222320

6. A 10 x 7in (25 x 17cm) watercolour of a female nude by Spike Milligan (1918-2002) will be offered at Grand Auctions in Folkestone on September 28. Executed in 1948, the painting was given to a close friend of Milligan’s by his wife, Shelagh Sinclair, upon his death. The auction house believes it to be the first time a painting by the former Goon has gone under the hammer. Estimate £800-1200. Contact 01303 220440
