Buying a property overseas as a holiday home, for retirement, emigration or as an investment remains a desirable goal for many. Six years ago, the Association of Independent Property Professionals (AIPP) was founded to help make that purchase safer and easier. The AIPP’s main aim was to raise operational standards in the
industry by establishing a professional framework for companies which shared the vision of a safer, self-regulated industry for the good of all. Importantly, however, it also saw the need to shed light on
the buying process by providing impartial advice and information for buyers. Today, many companies - agents, developers and those offering
professional services to the industry - have joined the AIPP and voluntarily signed up to its code of conduct, to which they are held accountable. This, the sixth edition of our consumer guide, continues the
AIPP’s tradition of providing a valuable reference guide to buying overseas. Its pages cover all the fundamentals of the buying process from what to expect of your agent or developer to how to plan your finances and the pitfalls to avoid. And it outlines the AIPP’s role in the industry and introduces you to its members, who we believe are well-placed to help you. You will also find the AIPP’s mantra - use a truly independent
lawyer - stated time and time again. Worryingly, we still see situations where the buyers have not employed their own lawyer yet this remains the best way to safeguard your interests. Our very best wishes for a successful property search.
