CRACKERJACK, owned and skippered by Alan Krulisch wins the 60th Maine Retired Skipper's Race held at Maine Maritime Academy, Castine on 20 August.
CASTINE – The 60th Maine Retired Skipper’s
Race was held at Maine Maritime Academy at Castine on 20 August. The day was near perfect with a nice sou’wester blowing be- tween 10 and 15 knots and bright sunny skies. The first to cross was CRACKERJACK, owned and skippered by Alan Krulisch, but he was not the only winner.
There were 33 boats entered and just one did not make the start. This is a pursuit race, where the handicap is figured into the start- ing time. The first boat to start was the schoo- ner ALAMAR at 1300. She was sailed by Llewellyn Bigelow. The last over was PAYAH KUN at 1423, skippered by Admiral Rogers who was the oldest skipper in the race at the young age of 94.
The course took the racers from the bell buoy off Castine, over to a mark off Turtle Head, down the east side of Islesboro to the Islesboro Ledge, back to the bell buoy off Castine, back out to Islesboro Ledge and then back to the finish at the bell buoy off Castine.
It was a close race with all finishing within an hour.
After the race everyone gathered at MMA’s waterfront building for cocktails, dinner and the awards ceremony. AWARDS
