September 2011 MAINE COASTAL NEWS Page 19. LOBSTER BOAT RACING SEASON ENDS AT PORTLAND

There were no entrants in Gasoline Class A and just one entrant in Class B, which was Stephen Cowperthwaite’s ROUGH-N- READY. There were three entrants in Class C: Rocky Alley’s LORNA R. [Riley/Adrian Beal, 1973, 496 Chevrolet]; BLACK DIAMOND and Chris Church’s SASSY FRASS [Repco 30, 455 Oldsmobile]. LORNA R. took the win with BLACK DIAMOND second. There were no entrants in Class D.

In the Diesel Classes, first up was Class A, which saw Thomas Young’s ETHAN R. [South Shore 30, 225-hp John Deere] win over Avery Scott’s RESILENT [Osmond 29, 210- hp Isuzu]. Five boats were entered in Class B. For the first time this year, Cameron Crawford entered his RICH AMBITION, which is a Robert Rich built wooden boat powered with a 220-hp John Deere. She ended up in a tight battle, but beat Matt Lester’s SURPRISE [North Shore 32, 225-hp John Deere] to the finish line for the win. In Class C Erick Blackwood’s SHANNA & ERICK [Osmond 27, 300-hp] won with Nick Wiberg’s MISS KATIE [Holland 30, 265 hp Cummins] Sec- ond. Dana Beal’s RIGHT STUFF [Libby 34, 300 hp Caterpillar] won Class D, with Brian Smith’s ENDANGERED SPECIES [Calvin 36, 320-hp] second and Jason Faulkingham’s TYLER & HANNAH [Stanley 36, 225-hp, John Deere] third. There were no entrants in Class E, but there were five on the line for Class F. Winfred Alley, Jr.’s VICTORIA ANN [Calvin Beal 34, 430-hp Cummins] lead the way to the finish. Second went to Brent Davis’ HEE HAW [Wayne Beal 34, 220-hp John Deere] followed by Clair B. Whitten’s CC & WATER [Mitchell Cove 35, 350-hp Yanmar]. There was only one entrant in Class G, Todd Ritchie’s SEACOCK [Calvin Beal 34, 436-hp, Sisu]. Six boats came to the line for Class H. The winner was Bryant Kennedy’s MADISON ALEXA [Osmond 37, 500-hp Cummins] followed by Buddy Trundy’s MISS LISA [Repco 37, Diesel: 400-hp] and

Keven Tozier’s DEBT-ICATION [Flowers 38, 525-hp John Deere]. There was only one entrant in Class I, Bill Haass’ DUNCAN & BLAKE [Mitchell Cove 35, 500-hp MAN]. In Class J, it was David Myrick’s JANICE ELAINE [Northern Bay 38, 610-hp Cummins] getting the win over Brian Bridge’s PADASA [Dixon 42, 700-hp Caterpillar 3406]. Class K was going to be the race to watch this day. Before the season started Tom Clemons of Harpswell sold MOTIVATION [Duffy 37, 900-hp Mack] to Carroll Staples of Swan’s Island. She has always been one of the fastest diesel boats out there. Also on the line was James West’s and Glenn Crawford’s WILD, WILD WEST [West 28, 466 cu. in. Interna- tional]. She can be fast and/or develop an engine issues and die on the course. It was a tight race between her and MOTIVATION and it was WILD, WILD WEST the winner. MOTIVATION was second and Wayne Gray’s OCEAN BREEZE [South Shore 38, 850-hp Caterpillar] third. There were no en- trants on Class L, but six boats came to the line for Class M, 40 feet and over, up to 750 hp. This has been a hard fought battle between Billy Bob Faulkingham’s 51 [Osmond 40, 610- hp Cummins], Patrick Faulkingham’s GRAMP’S BIRD [Osmond 40, 700-hp Iveco] and Dixon Smith’s SIZE MATTERS [Libby 41, 750-hp Iveco] for the top place in the year end awards. At the start 51 had a couple of boat length lead over SIZE MATTERS, but in the end it was SIZE MATTERS followed by 51, and GRAMP’S BIRD. Next came Class N and it was 4 GIRLS the winner. Second went to Christopher Sawyer’s PEYTON CHAR- LOTTE [Young Brothers 45, 900-hp Mack] and third was Charles Kelly’s LAMB OF GOD [Wesmac 46, 850-hp Caterpillar]. In the Gasoline Free-for-All it was LORNA R. followed by BLACK DIAMOND. In the Diesel Free-for-All it was another tight battle with WILD, WILD WEST first, MOTIVATION second and 4 GIRLS third.

Travis Otis' FIRST TEAM was stolen on night of 18 August and found following day.

In the Wooden Boat Race it was all LORNA R. However, there was a real battle for second between RICH AMBITION and Wayne Rich’s RICH RETURNS, both Robert Rich built boats, which was won by RICH AMBITION.

In the most dangerous race on the coast, Lady Skipper’s, Heather Holt took the helm of JANICE ELAINE and showed her stern all the way up the course for the win.

In the Fastest Lobster Boat Race LORNA R. to the line and she had the speed to best the diesel boats. With the drop of the flag one could tell that this was a close race between LORNA R., MOTIVATION, and WILD, WILD WEST. At the half way point it looked like a battle between LORNA R. and WILD, WILD WEST for the win, but just a little bit further up the course trouble struck LORNA R. and she slowed crossing the line fourth with a gear issue. WILD, WILD WEST

took the win with MOTIVATION right on her stern and 4 GIRLS third.

On Sunday 12 August it was onto the Merritt Bracket Lobster Boat Races at Pemaquid, which were dedicated to Bob Fosset who passed away this past winter. Fosset had been involved with these races for as long as I can remember and was the announcer for the spectators.

The Merritt Brackett races do not use the same racing classes and this makes for some different competition. There are three work boat classes, which they call clam diggers and lobster pickers. In the first race, out- boards 25 hp and under; skiffs 16-feet and under; age 18 and under, there were seven entrants, which was won by Jason Poland’s LITTLE E. Second went to Kimberly Reed’s SALTY DOG [12-foot Mirrorcraft, O/B 25-hp
