New York’s Pelham Middle School was one of over 180 schools that participated in Frost Valley’s Environmental Education program this year. As part of their Earth Science curriculum, a trip to Frost Valley combined their classroom studies with hands-on experiential learning. As earth science teacher Tom Roksvold explains, “By all accounts of students and staff, this was an excellent experience, work and fun. It involved individual effort, and teambuilding; students learned to live without technology and enjoyed conversations with each other. Frost Valley gave the students an opportunity to see for themselves the geology, astronomy and environmental stewardship concepts they study in their classrooms. The Catskill Mountains are a true example of a dissected plateau and the concept of stewardship pervaded everything we did.” The students also learned about the value of composting and participated in a contest to determine which group wasted the least amount of food at mealtime. One of the most popular activities was the Night Awareness Hike, which helped students to understand the natural world at night, develop listening skills and appreciate a star filled sky. Students remembered the trip as serious work and fun. One student recalled, “I am not afraid of heights but going down the zipline was scary. I overcame my fear and became proud of myself and went back and tried it a second time.”
