Redevelopment proposed for former Mautz Paint building on East Wash


Madison - 6/11/2011 A 4.2-acre site on East Washington Avenue would get a makeover and be home to 750 jobs, many of them in sustainable industries, under a plan announced Monday.


The city’s Board of Estimates approved a resolution at its Monday meeting that would authorize up to $325,000 from the city for Hovde Properties of Madison, which is proposing a $40 million to $50 million redevelopment of the former Mautz Paint property in the 900 block of East Washington Avenue across the street from Breese Stevens Field.


The money comes from a $1 million award fund from the state to capitalize the Brownfield Remediation/Elimination and Workforce Development program. BREWD funds are targeted toward projects that return employment to and cause the redevelopment and reuse…

Too many big plans have failed to materialize in this underutilized industrial area ripe for business and job growth.

Ken Notes: I agree but lets get this one right -- it is one of the last major corridors with this type of opportunity. Move fast but keep the park, transportation, and other issues on the table. Lets see if we can create a new strategy for development in Madison.
