02 REAL-TIME PASSENGER INFORMATIONSUPPLEMENT

Martin Böhm Head of ITS Deployment Unit, AustriaTech GmbH

Providing real-time intermodal services to the European traveller

By looking at the recently published European Transport White Paper, a clear focus can be seen in making Europe’s transportation network resource efficient. One of the proposed measures to contribute to this goal is to provide ‘seamless multimodal door-to-door mobility’. Also, other European publications in this field (e.g. the ITS Action Plan and the ITS Directive) are requesting the provision of European-wide multimodal travel information.

It is expected that multimodal real-time traveller information services provided to the single traveller as on-trip services have the potential to:  Contribute to a modal shift away from individual traffic as travellers will be enabled to compare transport modes and make a choice

 Improve customer acceptance of Public Transport operation

 Reduce road traffic jams  Improve safety  Enlarge the mobility of people and goods across different transport modes through the provision of accessible and reliable information services.

To ensure the broad acceptance of multimodal traveller information services in real-time by the European travellers, these services need to run on their used devices (i.e. smartphones, navigational systems, PDAs etc) and need to provide seamless information and routing for all cities in one application. This is state-of-the-art for road transport information, but there is a big lack for public transport information. In some urban areas, public transport operators started to develop web-based services or simple smartphone applications for their travellers.

In most cases these developed systems are only providing public transport information (sometimes enhanced with walking information). Sometimes they are proprietary systems based on the cities’ or operators’ traffic management system informing the traveller about his/her trip in real-time. These systems work in some cities and for some operators, but a European-wide or even global approach is currently not envisaged.

In-Time will help travellers navigate easily to their destinations, especially on public transport
