New equipment to cut box handler’s fuel bills
Cooper SH has won a contract to supply 15 reach stackers and container handlers to container logistics company Pentalver Transport, at the
ports of
Felixstowe, Southampton and Tilbury and an inland facility at Cannock, Staffordshire.
The fleet which consists of 10 Konecranes SMV ECB 100 double-stacking empty container handlers and five Konecranes 4531 TB reach stackers will be delivered into Pentalver’s
Felixstowe, Southampton Tilbury operations.
It is estimated that the application of the Eco Drive fuel measurement tool will save over £20, 000 per year in fuel costs across the new fleet. In addition, the empty container handlers have been specified with a ‘high-rear’ cab position which will place the driver’s seat 1200mm higher over the rear ballast than the standard ‘low- rear’ position.
Spreading the word in Tilbury
Tilbury has become the first UK port to install new SweFrame spreader beams, at its short sea container terminal. The two new I-40 lightweight spreaders are designed to handle container sizes from 20 to 45ft with ISO twistlocks and have been fitted to two of the existing four cranes at the terminal. They have also been designed to operate in
conjunction with the Lasstech load sensing system, providing the crane operator with real time weight information directly in the operator’s cab. Benefits of the new spreader beams include higher lifting capacity; low power consumption; open access to service points; and a twistlock system that does not need mechanical or sensor adjustments.
and Grabbing the headlines
The Port of Liverpool said its new Liebherr mobile crane “massively reduced discharge time” in its first operational use. The 82-tonne crane was used alongside an existing mobile crane to unload a cargo of 2,500 tonnes of steel coil and 600 tonnes of steel plate from Brazil.
Despite poor weather, the new crane, which is equipped with real time diagnostic capability and can handle 82 tonnes at its hook and 41 tonnes in spreader mode, helped halve the normal discharge time for an operation of this sort.
David Huck, head of port operations for Peel Ports Mersey, said:
“It’s clear that this new mobile crane is already having a highly positive impact on operations at Liverpool. It will provide the capability to further enhance our customer services across a wide commodity mix including dry bulks, metals and containers handled by barge.” The crane is the first of several planned for delivery in 2011. They come with a range of both high and low density grabs with a cubic capacity of 13.5m³ and a 40ft spreader frame.
Size, strength and flexibility for Poole Harbour forklift
Poole Harbour Commissioners have taken delivery of a bespoke 33-1200B forklift machine from Cooper SH to handle containers weighing up to 27 tonnes. An additional fork attachment also allows it to handle 40 foot containers, making it the only port on the South West coast able to offer this facility, it says.
Engineering manager at Poole Harbour Commissioners, Paul Gillingham, explained: “We had seen a significant increase in
container weight over the
past year due to our customers maximising the efficiency of container space. A lot of pressure was being put on our handling fleet and so we needed a new
machine to ensure we maintain high levels of productivity.” The specialist fork carriers also increase the truck’s strength, enabling it to handle a variety of products including imported steel beams.
Cooper SH has also supplied Poole Harbour with the Eco Drive driver behaviour management tool, to help lower fuel and life cycle

Cargotec has unveiled two new machine ranges. The first is the new DCG90-180 range of Kalmar counterbalance lift trucks with capacities ranging from 9-18 tonnes. It brings a range of improvements that will be gradually phased across Kalmar’s entire counterbalance fleet, including a new cabin design. The EGO cabin is described as markedly different to its predecessor, with major

and visibility, says Cargotec. The new generation of trucks also promise greater total lifetime savings by being easier to drive and are designed to raise uptime and driver productivity levels. A new open design and curved front and rear windows improve
the operator’s view diagonally, forwards and backwards. The EGO cabin uses a solid safety cage construction with profiled beams that eliminate blind spots. A new electronic
steering system and
human-machine interface ensures the same set-up, regardless of which Kalmar vehicle is being used.
Cargotec has also launched a new range of Kalmar ‘F’- series heavy forklift trucks. Comprising four models with lift capacities spanning from 18 to 25 tonnes, the range promises cleaner
engines with better
fuel efficiency, a new hydraulic system, an ergonomic cabin and diagnostic system.

Paul Gillingham added: “We are delighted with the new forklift and the long-term approach that Cooper SH has taken to accommodate our needs. We work a very tough operation and the all-round forklift will help us manage the increased container weights safely and efficiently.”

variable hydraulic system. The load sensing axial piston pumps only use as much pressure as needed for the specific load. With reduced pressures and temperatures, this significantly improves the reliability of the entire hydraulic system. Fuel consumption is also reduced. The cab is separately suspended and isolated, with 360° visibility and noise levels have also been reduced to comply with EU directives. Rounded counterweights within a new engine hood design give improved visibility to the rear and three lifting mast options are offered - duplex, duplex- free lift and triplex-free lift for maximum operational flexibility.
