On Sunday April 10, 2011 a large group represent- ing most of the foxhunting clubs in central Maryland gathered at the Potomac Hunt Club to celebrate the 70th birthday of a legend in the foxhunting world, Allen Forney. Allen began hunting under the tute- lage of Huntsman Hall of Fame member Johnny Bill Linton at the Taylorsville Hunt outside of Westmin- ster, moving into the role of huntsman in the mid- 70s when Johnny moved on to Howard County. In 1977, Allen became the huntsman for Iron Bridge Hounds (which hunted the Laurel/Burtonsville/ Scaggsville area). Riding hard in this tough coun- try, bounded as it was even decades ago with major highways, Allen quickly became expert at following hounds through the numerous commercial “sand pits” (a.k.a. the gravel pits) that comprised much of the country at the time and proved to be a favorite haunt of the local foxes. When the country of Iron Bridge fi nally became untenable, Allen rejoined his old mentor when his pack merged with Howard County in 1985 to be- come the present day Howard County–Iron Bridge Hounds. Allen served Johnny Bill as his professional whipper-in until Johnny fi nally retired in 1989 and turned the horn over to Allen. Allen moved to “semi-retirement” several years ago, but he sure was in no hurry to hang up the spurs! Po- tomac huntsman Larry Pitts invited Allen to visit his pack, and not long after that, with the blessing of the Potomac Masters, Allen began serving as an honor- ary whipper-in. With his quiet, easy manner, Allen is a consummate showman with young hounds and is often pressed into service by other clubs to “show my puppy” at the big shows.
