Around the Ring... John Ammerman in the Hall of Fame
On April 9, judge, show manager and jump builder John Ammerman was inducted into the Show Jumping Hall of Fame. John was recog- nized alongside Leonard King and Good Twist as this year’s honorees. John has earned respect as a national and in- ternational USEF “R” jump judge. He is one of only two FEI “O” level judges in the U.S. John has served on the judge jury at two Olympic Games and was president of the jury at two FEI World Cup Finals, the Pan American Games and the Washington and New York CSIOs. He also served as a Foreign Judge at CSIOs in To- ronto and Spruce Meadows. John served as show manager of the Wash- ington International Horse Show for almost three decades. He was also the show manager at one time of the Potomac Horse Festival, Up- perville Colt and Horse Show, Ox Ridge Char- ity Horse Show, HITS Indio Winter Circuit, HITS Ocala Winter Circuit and the Vermont Summer Festival’s six-week series. His jumps are often found in show rings at most of the top venues on the East Coast and were also used at the 1979 Pan American Games in San Juan, the 1980 World Cup Final in Baltimore and the 1984 Olympic Games in Los Angeles. As a volunteer, John was a member of the
USEF Jumper Committee and Management Committees and was involved with the cre- ation of the Jumper Judges Clinic System. He has also served on the board of directors of the American Grandprix Association and the Show Jumping Hall of Fame.
Washington International Updates
In March of this year, the staff at the Wash- ington International Horse Show announced that it signed a three-year contract with the Verizon Center to keep the show in Washing-
ton, DC through 2013. “We are thrilled to re- main at Verizon Center and continue this great Washington tradition,” chief operating offi cer of WIHS Anthony Hitchcock said. T e show has been at this location since 2000. In other WIHS Bridget

2011 Rule Chang- es for Hunters

comes to WIHS from Discovery Communication where she has served in a vari- ety of senior roles since 2004, most recently, as direc- tor of strategic planning and communications. Before that, Bridget was the vice president and managing director of Hayes & Associates, which special- izes in Washington, DC event production and sponsorship management. She also served as director of communications for the U.S. Eques- trian Federation. T e 2011 WIHS will be held October 25-30.
Zone Specifi cations Revised
At the 2011 USEF Annual Meeting, the U.S. Hunter/Jumper Association revised the Zone Specifi cations, which were then approved dur- ing the meeting and went into eff ect on Janu- ary 23, 2011. T e changes state that Classics for each zone will now follow the new HU146 rule that was in eff ect as of December 1, 2010. T e USHJA National Hunter Classic was also clarifi ed to allow participation in zones with height restrictions. Several rule changes concerning Hunt- ers were passed by the USEF at the 2011 An- nual Meeting this past January. Some of these rules will not go into ef- fect until the end of this competition season; others are already in ef- fect. Below is a list of

• HU110 (038-10) Pony Hunter – T e pony hunter defi nition and eligibility subhead #10 was changed to read “Ponies shown by adults at a Licensed Competition cannot compete in any rated Pony Hunter sections at the same competition with a junior rider. (Exception: when competing at a multi-breed/discipline competition, a pony may be shown in the breed restricted hunter section by an adult and then also shown by a junior rider in the open Pony Hunter section.)” T e exception is what was changed to the rule. T is rule went into eff ect on April 1, 2011.
• HU159.2 (578-10) Entry Fees – T e follow- ing rule was added to the hunter division sub- chapter on conduct: “When entries require that High Performance Working Hunters are com- bined with Green Working sections, a section entry fee will be required for the High Perfor- mance Working Hunter section and individual classes will not be able to be entered.” T is rule continued...
