Well the snow has finally started to disappear, the ice is out of the rivers and lakes, but I am still waiting for some warmer weather to begin work on SATURN. I would really like to get going on the engine room, which has been neglected for way too long. The first job, and a major one, will be cleaning and painting the engine room and fo’c’sle. Then when my step-son Noah returns from the cruise on board Maine Maritime Academy’s STATE OF MAINE, I am hoping he can get the engine and systems back in shape. We need a professional! The other day I was given a surprise on SATURN when I found 31 inches of water in the bilge. I started the pump and then began looking for where all this water was coming from. The deck has a couple of leaks, but this was way too much water from these sources. I looked around the engine room, in between the frames, but there was no evidence of a problem. I then headed up the starboard side with flashlight in hand, when I spied a ray of sunlight shining in from below the waterline. That is never a good thing. Fortunately, the tide was out and it was an easy fix, with a small amount of epoxy, a thin piece of wood all jammed in place. This is really only a small problem where she had been damaged in years past and never repaired properly. This was only a very minor inconvenience compared to what others have gone through recently. Facebook has brought people closer together, and despite most of us being in our own little worlds, we now know what is going on in other little worlds far removed from ours. Yes, some is just every day life events, but others are

much more to the point that they are life changing.

As we get older it becomes clear that life is finite and as we progress through it, there are changes. When younger we view things like we have time to do everything we would like to. However, as time passes we realize this is not the case. The economy has been a change that has affected us all. Things are better with the stock market, but there are still negative factors such as climbing fuel and food prices. It would be logical to think that most would not be willing to spend, but that does not seem to be the case. This year’s Maine Boatbuilder’s Show was a major surprise to all those that exhibited there. The numbers of those attending was high and equal to 2006. All the exhibitors I talked with said that they were more than pleased. Some obtained jobs, others sold boats and some got excellent leads. Out on the road I am seeing the same thing, people are spending. One may attribute it to the fact that people are tired of not doing what they want and that if they wait for things to change they may never get to enjoy what they want to. My biggest concern is fuel prices, since this affects everything that we do. However, most people are just being smarter and not doing unnecessary travel. Those that own boats should realize that fuel is a minor expense in the scheme of things, especially for those that do not travel great distances, and that they should do what they enjoy. One can only hope that despite the troubled world that we live in that things continue to improve economically. I am not holding my breath!
