65? Confused

about Medicare? As an active employee enrolled in

the state Health Insurance Program (NYSHIP), if you or your dependents are eligible for Medicare, it would be secondary to the NYSHIP coverage. Therefore, enrollment in Medicare

is not required, with the following exceptions: • If you or your dependent

becomes eligible for Medicare because of end-stage renal disease (ESRD) or kidney failure. Medicare becomes primary at the end of the required waiting period for patients with ESRD. The NYSHIP General Information Book has more information; • If you are covering a same-sex

spouse or domestic partner, Medicare becomes primary when your same- sex spouse or domestic partner turns 65, or; • If you are enrolled in NYSHIP as

the dependent of a retired spouse (rather than in your own right as an employee), you have “retiree” coverage in NYSHIP and must enroll in Medicare when you turn 65 or become entitled to enroll in Medicare because of disability. Aside from these exceptions, if you

or one of your eligible dependents turns 65 or becomes disabled while you are an active employee, you may delay enrollment in Medicare Parts A and B until you retire, without penalty. Or, you may enroll in Part A only,

to be eligible for some secondary (supplemental) benefits from Medicare for hospital-related services. Usually, you would be charged no premium for Medicare Part A. If you expect to leave state service,

and you or your spouse is 65 or older, contact your Social Security office three months before active employment ends to enroll in Medicare. If you are 65 or older when you

leave state service, NYSHIP will no longer be your primary insurer beginning the first day of the month following a “runout” of 28 days after the last day of the last payroll period for which you were paid. Be sure you have Medicare Parts A

and B in effect at that time. — Lorraine Simpkins
