MULTIMODAL Into Europe with GBRf

GB Railfreight (GBRf) – which in 2010 became a part of Europorte, the rail freight arm of Groupe Eurotunnel – has in its ten-year existence become the third largest freight operator in Britain. As well as bulk traffic the company has just launched its interhubGB fully integrated road and rail freight distribution network between the London and Manchester areas.

Run by GBRf and 4Rail Logistics, the service caters for all volumes from single boxes to multiple or train loads. It also offers connections with Europe via the intermodal hub at Lille with a daily connection to Daventry. The new service forms part of the European strategy GBRf has been developing since its acquisition by Eurotunnel in 2010.

Organisations investing in training programmes want to see practical benefits to their investment quickly, says Hull University Business School. Moreover, they want training tailored to their needs and the learning style of staff.

Recently there has been a massive rise in management and executive education in the workplace. Accompanying this growth is the need to change the way learning is delivered – to understand that training staff is not about bookish theories that are distanced from the realities of the workplace.

At Hull University Business

School, academics work closely with business leaders to tailor programmes, taking real life information from companies to provide examples, whether students are being taught on-site or in a university classroom. Problem-based learning can

offer almost immediate benefits and students are often more inspired and can more easily grasp the subject. Many traditional training programmes are very theoretical, so students often quickly forget the information. Customised short courses allow groups of students from the same

organisation to benefit from a more personalised and relevant learning experience. For example, during a recent leadership development programme run by the business school for Associate British Ports (ABP), delegates were asked to investigate and present a money saving project for the business. Although not all project outcomes were realistic, the implementation of one student project alone saved the organisation as much money as the cost of the programme. The school’s short course programme also reflects this business need. From the one-day

Boxes big business for Forth Ports

Containers are a key part of Forth

Ports’ operations with

large volumes going through the Scottish Port of Grangemouth, Scotland’s largest container terminal, Rosyth in Fife and at Tilbury’s short sea and deep sea operations on the Thames. Grangemouth is Scotland’s largest container port specialising in short-sea feeder operations linking Scotland to UK and European deep-sea ports. The container terminal is rail linked with regular connections to Glasgow, Aberdeen and the North of England. Forth Ports has recently invested in new equipment and technology at Grangemouth’s container terminal to boost capability to over 200,000 boxes a year. Tilbury, on the Thames, now has daily sailings to Rotterdam, Bilbao, Duisburg and the Baltic Ports.

Tilbury is also a major shareholder in Tilbury Container Services, the port’s deep-sea container facility which handled over 300,000 boxes in 2010 and has won three new services for 2011.

The port is also the Distribution Hub for the 2012 Olympic Games and Paralympic Games, with 500,000sq

ft of warehousing space. Tilbury ro-ro tonnages

increased by 14% with Hyundai cars importing just over 41,000 vehicles in 2010.

Forth Ports’ main specialist facility in Scotland is at Rosyth where cars for Mazda, Mercedes, Volvo and Ford are handled on regular ro-ro services from Zeebrugge.

PD Ports and PD Logistics is promoting

the group’s full

range of ports and logistics services, including its highly- acclaimed portcentric strategy. The group includes the ports of Teesport and Hartlepool as well as activities at various other UK ports including Hull, Felixstowe and Immingham, offers handling for containers, breakbulk and bulk, as well as

award-winning supply chain services.

Both ASDA and Tesco, which have established import centres at Teesport, have seen volumes increase through the port and Taylors of Harrogate has moved all

its tea and coffee imports to a specially built warehouse there after trials proved the service to be both cost-effective and environmentally-friendly.

Get to grips with your supply chain

Global supply chain planning company, Barloworld Supply Chain Software (SCS) is launching its

latest supply

chain modelling software, CAST Aurora, at Multimodal. It can be used by third party logistics, manufacturing, consulting and retail companies to evaluate and

identify different supply chain strategies and realise cost saving and service improvements. A multi time period function enables companies to not only identify the ideal location for warehouses but also the ideal times to open and close them according to seasonal peaks.

Training with practical benefits Stepping on the gas

Howard Tenens, one of the largest family-owned logistics companies in the UK, has rolled out dual fuel (gas/diesel) across its truck fleet and has installed three gas refuelling stations at its Andover, Boston and London depots. The company comments: “We are hoping that others will follow us into the gas vehicle market; we can offer access to our gas refuelling stations for others and in this way they will not have to incur the high cost of this infrastructure.” Howard Tenens, headquartered in Stroud, Gloucestershire, provides tailored logistics services across the entire

business spectrum, including warehousing, handling and distribution to ideally suit each individual customer’s needs. It operates about 3 million square feet of warehousing space across the UK from 15 depots nationally.
