RISKTEC – THE COMPANY

THE SECRETS OF EFFECTIVE RISK MANAGEMENT

As with any endeavour, the Wind Energy Industry presents risks which can cause harm to people and the environment, programme delays, cost overruns, plant/asset damage and/or loss of reputation.

SCALE AND LOCATION

The magnitude of these risks is heavily dependent on the nature of the development. A large wind farm on desolate moorland in Scotland is likely to present a reduced risk compared to a single turbine in an urban or industrial setting. Offshore wind presents different/greater risks due, in part, to the more onerous construction process and personnel transfer issues.

INDUSTRY COMPARISONS

Whilst not comparable to say the Oil & Gas Industry, in terms of ultimate consequences, if these risks are inadequately managed, they could still result in fatalities and considerable financial impairment and loss of reputation. This could jeopardise the entire project/operation and potentially escalate to undermine the commercial stability of all associated companies.

As it comes to terms with its scale, profile and identity, the Wind Energy Industry has begun to show an appetite for practical advice/guidance to ensure it plays its part in the fight against climate change in a manner which reduces risk to acceptable levels.

Against this backdrop, we are delighted to introduce Gareth Ellor, a Director at Risktec Solutions Ltd, has offered to share with us practical risk management advice/guidance tailored to the specific challenges of the Wind Energy Industry.

Risktec is an established, independent and specialist risk management consulting and training company wholly owned by its employees.

They assist clients in major hazard industries and commercial and public sectors to manage health, safety, security, environmental and business risk. It was formed with the specific aim of helping organisations protect their employees, the public, the environment and their own physical and financial assets, by cost-effectively reducing and controlling risk.

The company’s approach is based on a unique blend of creative engineering, scientific and management skills, proven methodologies, up-to-date analytical tools and data, and a practical, common- sense outlook.

RISKTEC’SWIND ENERGY EXPERIENCE

Whilst the majority of their experience is within the “traditional” high-risk sectors of Oil & Gas, Nuclear, Defence and Transport, their skills and experience are readily transferable to the Wind Energy Sector. Indeed, they strongly believe that the Wind Energy Industry can learn a great deal from the often painful lessons learned by more mature industries in how to manage risk in an appropriate, sensible and cost-effective manner, provided a proportionate approach is adopted.

To date they have used this experience to help a range of Wind Industry clients with particular emphasis on the safe siting of turbines, effective management of operational risks, whilst ensuring legislative compliance, and the implementation of effective organisational health and safety management systems.

GARETH’S CV

With over 15 years experience in the management and technical delivery of complex safety related engineering projects, primarily within high-hazard industries, Gareth applies his mature understanding of the integrated management of design, safety and risk to manage a number of consulting projects across the Oil & Gas, Industrial, Renewable and Nuclear Sectors.
