Watertown. His car spun out-of-control on a snowy road, crossed into the opposite lane and was struck by another vehicle. He died that morning. PEF Executive Board member Jeff
Janiszewski said the 50-year-old Schelleng was “a first-rate professional.” “Those who knew Doug are very
saddened by his passing. We have lost one of our own. At the state Department of Economic Development (DED), we’ve had people die after they have become sick. But this is the first time we have had someone die in the line of duty. It was a shock to so many people,” Janiszewski said. Schelleng began working for DED in
1999 in the Ogdensburg office which later moved to Watertown. The redevelopment of the Franklin Building was a part of his job. “Doug felt so strongly about the
project, he continued working on it even after he transferred to the Troy office in 2008,” Janiszewski said. Schelleng was an avid hiker and
loved baseball, especially the New York Yankees. Schelleng liked to cook, enjoyed music and reading, and was passionate about the well-being of small communities. He also had a dry wit. He is survived by his wife, children, parents and siblings. PEF Division 262 took up a
collection, supplemented by division funds, for a scholarship in Schelleng’s memory for his college-aged son. Donations in his memory may be
made to the Adirondack Mountain Club, 814 Goggins Road, Lake George, NY 12845.
