is in to have her cockpit replaced. The roof is off and they are replacing the canvas.


At Boothbay Harbor Shipyard in Boothbay Harbor they have one of the train- ing vessels for Kings Point up on the ways. This is an YP class vessel and is in to have her stem repaired. A 15-foot section has been removed and replaced. They are also doing some deck and system work.


At the same time they are working on getting their storage customers ready for the upcoming season. They said that these cus- tomers are a little more interested in doing bigger projects since the economic slow- down as shown signs of getting better.


Southport Island Marine on Southport Island is busy restoring a Celebrity class sloop. They have removed her deck and are refinishing the interior of her hull. A new deck will be made along with bulkheads. This project will be done later this spring. A Southport 30 is in for a major cosmetic upgrade. She has just been sold to a local owner.


A Sea Dory is in for some bottom and lower engine work. They will also upgrade the electrical system.


The Handibilly, which they launched earlier this season, is back for some minor additions and annual maintenance. In a separate bay is a Christmas Cove 21 and a Boothbay Harbor One-design. They have sponge blasted the bottom of the Christmas Cove 21 and are now getting ready

Growing up sailing on the waters of Martha’s Vineyard (Massachusetts) sparked Howell’s interest in yachts that grew to a passion for both racing and cruising. He has an extensive sailing résumé that includes working as a professional yacht captain and crew on various racing sailboats competing in international races worldwide. He worked at Pedrick Yacht Designs for seven years, adding participation on two America’s Cup design teams to his experience.


Howell joined Langan Design when it first opened in 1997 and has since designed a wide range of custom and production sail- ing and motor yachts, including the 130’ classic styled ketch Victoria of Strathearn; the 78’ IMS Maxi Yacht Sagamore; the 85’ pilothouse sloop Adjutor; and the 88’ cold molded three-masted sail training vessel Spirit of Bermuda.

to add a barrier coat. This will be followed by a coat of VC Offshore bottom paint. They then have a lot of work to do on the keel. The Boothbay Harbor One-design has had her entire hull sponge blasted. Next, she will be faired and Awlgripped.


They have several more bottom jobs to do. There are two more Boothbay One-de- signs and two J-80s scheduled.


With over 60 storage customers that will need work before going over this spring, they will be busy for a while.


Paul E. Luke, Inc. in East Boothbay has a Bristol 35, an Alden design, in the shop for an extensive refit and a new engine. The exterior deck had wet core and this is being replaced. They are also replacing her teak toe rails, handrails and coamings. The engine was an MD17D and is being replaced with a D240, which is a little more horsepower. They also replaced the shaft and cutlass bearing. The service boat for Burnt Island Light- house is in for some minor work. She had some rotten wood beneath the rub rail which is being replaced.


A Boothbay Harbor One-design is in for some minor glasswork. She will then be refaired and Awlgripped.


A 36 foot trawler yacht had her stainless steel tanks removed and these have been replaced with fiberglass ones.

gear steering system is being replaced with a hydraulic one.


The stove department has been very active this year as has the anchor department.


Washburn & Doughty in East Boothbay has just laid the keel on Hull #101, which is a new design by Bruce Washburn. The con- tract for this 93-foot Z-drive tug was signed back in October and will be for Moran. Hull #99 and #100 are 98-foot Z-drive tugs, which are being finished off for Bay Houston and Souderman & Young, who will use them in Houston.


Washburn & Doughty has designed an 80-foot Z-drive tug, which is gaining some interest in the industry. There are a number of customers who do not need a 92 or 98 footer, and could easily do their work with an 80- footer. Presently no one has signed a con- tract, but there has been plenty of interest.


At Lash Brothers in Friendship there are two boats in the shop undergoing repairs and several others waiting to come in. One is the wooden boat OUTLAW of Friendship, which is almost done. The new shelter is on and they just need to finish the rails. The owner will do the painting, install the hydraulics and hook up the engine. The other boat in the shop is ISLAND MISTRESS, which has her engine out, a MAN, which is being rebuilt. They are also going to deal with some wiring issues and then Awlgrip her topsides.


Next, they will be replacing the engine in a Wayne Beal 36. They will be removing her 3126 Caterpillar diesel and replacing it with a Cummings diesel.


This will be followed with a RP-40, which will be coming in to have her washboards and stern deck removed. They will put in new
