Calendar helps local groups

TWO local charities split the £1,362 pro- ceeds of the seventh Staplehurst Calendar produced by artist Ken Collins. The 2011 calendar, which features Ken’s drawings of churches throughout the Weald Deanery, yielded the third highest donation since the annual project began and was divided between Weald Club for the Disabled, which meets at the McCabe Centre, and Leonard Cheshire Disability, based in Sobell Lodge. He sold a total of 350 calendars, each costing £4. Sponsorship from 13 local companies and organisations covered printing costs and other donations were received. Ken has begun working on the 2012 calendar, which will feature images of village footpaths and raise money for local churches.

Road closure alert MOTORISTS have been warned that a part of Broom- field Road in Kingswood will be closed from 9am to 5pm on Sundays until April due to micro-asphalt re-surfacing. The closure will affect the junction with Chartway Street, through the Gravelly Bottom Road crossroads for around 900m to just beyond the last residential property. Access to Broomfield Road properties will be maintained whenever possible although residents are warned that short delays may be experienced.

Extension refusal

upheld on appeal APROPOSAL to erect an extension in Goudhurst Road, Marden, was refused on appeal. Inspector JulieWest reported that

the extension at Roughlands Barn, which would have created a formal courtyard, would have been harm- ful to the character and appearance of the countryside and the host property. It would also have been clearly visible from the public footpath that abuts the building. Maidstone Council originally re-

fused the application in September last year.
