shindig_mag@hotmail.com Volume 2 Issue 8, January-February 2009 Hello Shindiggers
Well, here we are it’s 2009. What will the next 12 months bring? Which new bands will impress? What re-issues will become part of our essential list? And what will happen in the Shindigverse? I see no reason why Shindig! will not become a more recognized name as our profile grows wider. I am confident our readership will increase as more people find out about us, and that advertisers (in this uncertain period of time) can rely on us gaining them sales. After all, we are a magazine that cater “for people who want more”. Shindig! doesn’t get recycled when read or flicked through casually. Every page is savoured, so whether it’s a review or an advert it gets seen. As every attempt is made to run adverts that relate to the articles and reviews you won’t find chat lines or double-glazing advertised. So please support the labels and traders that work with us and let them know that you heard about them here. Advertisers are our lifeline.
I guess you want to know what we have scheduled for the following year. At this stage I won’t let the cat out of the bag, but you can be sure that we will cover the same eclectic mix of artists new and old, cinema, literature and more in our usual manner.
To say that each issue gets better is no small claim, but with this one I think we have the perfect balance. The Flamin’ Groovies story features a selection of short articles and interviews and a catch-all band history for the uninitiated. Kris Needs’ (Zig Zag/Sounds/ Mojo) journey of discovery with the group is fantastic and is a story that I would love to be seen made into a film. Elsewhere we take in the Liverpool poetry scene and The Scaffold in an illuminating interview with Mike McGear (yep, that’s Paul’s brother), pieces on Sly & The Family Stone and psychedelic soul, UK freakbeat/psych lords The Fire, a look at the movers and shakers in Apple Publishing, psych rockers Stoneground, an obscure psych album by exotica star Yma Sumac and 20 questions with The Zombies, amongst the usual news, reviews, columns and mini- features. A very rounded issue!
Andy and myself would like to thank you, the reader, our wonderful team of writers, Slim, our publisher, for going beyond the call of duty and the roster of labels, publishers and musicians so willing to help us on our way. By jove, I think we’ve got there!
Sit back and enoy, Jon ‘Mojo’ Mills
Correction: In the last issue we ran a piece on John Idan's departure from The Yardbirds. Shindig! and John would invite you to
