ERCD020 PAUL HIBBETS – CHILDHOOD DREAM
Paul Hibbets from Rome, Georgia released his sole album in 1974. A superb slice of dreamy Christian folk/psych rock with fuzz and keyboards and has been favourably compared to Azitis and Joe Peace. There is plenty of huge swirling organ reminiscent of Focus and a strong commercial folk rock pop feel throughout. The excellent Doobie Brothers influenced “Manifestations” would have provided some good AOR FM plays. The standout track “Love God’s Little Children” contains strong heartfelt religious lyrics combined with crashing organ and fuzz interplay. This stands out as one of the very best Christian rock albums.
ERCD031 BOLDERDAMN- MOURNING
This album is very dynamic and has a huge soundstage. It shows the band as excellent tight musicians who were capable of both writing and performing original songs delivered with meaning and strong lyrics especially, and, as it turned out, ironically about Vietnam. The haunting doom-power of “Dead Meat”, a mind-blowing epic track clocking in at 15 minutes long, the moving boogie feel of “Got That Feeling” and the alarming “Monday Mourning” are just some of the great tracks on this KILLER album, which is of a consistently high standard throughout. “Mourning” is a mighty testament and one of the most essential powerhouse albums from the early 1970s.
ERCD041 THE KAPLAN BROTHERS – NIGHTBIRD
The ultimate loungerock extravaganza. A self-proclaimed “Electric symphony” that mixes Ennio Morricone with King Crimson as recorded by a Holiday Inn/Bar Mitzvah band from outer space. Crooner vocals soar on top of overly elaborate keyboard arrangements as the music abruptly throws you from one intense mood into another in true psychedelic fashion. No ideas are discarded as the meaning of life unfolds in glitzy Z-grade fashion -- if there’s a bad, cheesy move to be made, they’ll go for it. These guys probably thought they’d made the greatest LP of all time and in a way I guess it is - even regular folks with no interest in this scene are blown away by the Kaplans’ unsurpassed pretence and lack of reality checks. Must be heard to be believed, preferrably on acid. Acid Archives
ERCD037 THE SEARCH PARTY – MONTGOMERY CHAPEL
Aprimitive Christian folkrock LP which hitssometruly uniquemoodsandsoundsonabout 2/3rds of the tracks. Obviously inspired by the westcoast “psychedelic” sounds of the era, the Search Party take compositions by their spiritual mentor, a Catholic middle-aged priest, and turn them into primitive California garage folkrock and psych with fuzz leads and raw vocals! Most Christian “folkrock” LPs suffer from still having one foot left in Sunday School, but these young seminarians have definitely broken through to the other side. Side 1 ends with an unparalleled 9-minute downer folkrock excursion with heavy soul-searching lyrics that alone makes “Montgomery Chapel” worth checking out, but beware -- it’s crude, even the female vocalist has a strange edge. Unrehearsed confessions from a basement Music Emporium. - Acid Archives
