‘I still want to re-open village post office’

VILLAGERS in Detling have been told that the post office and store may re-open under new management. Potential owner Mark Fer- nando insists that he has the funds in place to buy the busi- ness, which closed in February, despite previous owner Michael Tamsett stating that Mr Fernando’s failure to produce a deposit caused the collapse of a deal between the pair before Christmas. Mr Fernando has recently leafleted the village, claiming he was not given enough time to clinch a £365,000 deal that included purchasing the neigh- bouring five-bedroom home. “I was given two weeks to com- plete the deal but the bankers wanted to undertake a commer- cial valuation,” he said. However, Mr Tamsett says that talks had been ongoing

since mid-autumn without progress, and he needed to set a January 15 deadline as his staff were on a 12-week redundancy notice. Mr Tamsett, who had previously agreed a £365,000 fee with Mr Fernando for the shop and neighbouring five- bedroom house, believes the buyer is unlikely to revive the deal now the shop has closed. But Sussex-based Mr Fer- nando said: “I will buy the property but the problem is se- curing the building as it needs money spent on it. “I will not walk away from it.

I can still get the valuation done in a few weeks.” Detling Parish Church is holding an open morning every fortnight – the next is Wednes- day, March 9 – from 10am to midday to act as a community meeting place in the absence of the shop. Free coffee is served.

Warning over credit card con

POLICE are warning elderly and vulnerable residents of con artists, following a series of in- cidents where offenders have stolen credit cards. A woman in Harrietsham

(aged 82) and another in Bearsted (86) were among the victims.A phone caller, claim- ing to work for either the police or a bank’s fraud investigation team asked for the victim’s ad- dress and date of birth, saying that they have been the subject of fraud on their bank account. They are then told that they will

A PLANNING inspector has supported Maidstone Council’s refusal to allow a Scout hall on land at Impton Lane, Walder- slade. In January last year, the coun-

cil rejected the plan, saying it would cause harm to ancient woodland, despite originally accepting a similar proposal in August 2004, which had not been activated. Inspector Philip Wilson said

by a man posing as one of the officials from these organisa- tions and are asked for their bank statements and for their cards, allegedly as evidence. Cash is then being drawn

from these stolen cards. DC Donna Hopper said: “I cannot stress strongly enough that under no circumstances would a real police officer ask for credit cards or bank statements to be handed over.”

Scout hall appeal is rejected

policy changes meant the land should now be protected. He re- ported: “A Scout hall providing the space and facilities pro- posed might be valued by the local community. “I have no convincing evi-

dence that the organisation for which it was intended could proceed within the life of any further planning permission. “Other sites might prove equally suitable.”
