‘Inadequate’ school has to improve

A MAIDSTONE primary school has been rated inadequate by Ofsted and has been or- dered to improve by this summer. The education watchdog gave Molehill

Copse Primary School, in Hereford Road, Shepway, until July to raise its pupils’ below average attainment in English and maths, overall progress and attendance. The inspection report said there had been considerable disruption to the leadership and management of the school which had slowed down the momentum of improve- ments that were reported at the last inspec- tion in 2007.

Animal magic boost for charity’s funds

THESE three RSPCA volunteers put the fun into fund-raising when they had their faces painted for the charity's an- nual bazaar. Bunny (Leonie Harrington), Tiger

(Carol Jacques) and Cat (Cherie Murray) certainly looked the part for the event at Sutton Valence village hall, which made £800 for the Maidstone and Tunbridge Wells branch. Leonie said: "We have to raise all of our

own funds. Every pound raised really does make a difference. "2010 was an incredibly difficult year

for us and we had to close our cattery doors as we were inundated with cats. Sadly, due to the recession, owners are putting off neutering their animals and not vaccinating, which leads to an in- crease in unwanted litters and an in- crease in disease. In just one month we spent £5,000 on vet fees."

Reunion date for ex-pupils

FORMER pupils and staff of Cornwallis School – be- fore it became an academy – are invited to a big re- union on Friday, June 17. Anyone at the school between 1959 and 2010 is

Headteacher Lee Round had begun to

tackle the school’s weaknesses with deter- mination, but there had been insufficient time for actions introduced to overturn the legacy of underachievement. Mr Round was praised for his attempts to

turn the school round since his appoint- ment in 2009 Lead inspector Margaret Coussins said:

“The school is improving as a result of the strong leadership of the head teacher, the new and effective leadership teams and the governing body.” Teaching was considered satisfactory

overall, but needed to remain consistent for pupils to be able to improve their progress. The Ofsted team, who visited the 291-

pupil school in November, considered that reception pupils got off to a good start and that the school’s attitude towards healthy lifestyles, contributions to the community and relations with parents and carers were also good. Behaviour had improved from in- adequate to satisfactory. Pupils with special educational needs

made similar progress to their peers while those in the unit for hearing impaired chil- dren made consistently good progress.
