Joop: The biggest scum band, besides ourselves, was without a doubt Group 1850. There were some really sleazy stories going around about them.


Frank: At first we didn’t want to believe the rumours, but I filled in for their bass player for a while and found out not only that they were true, but much worse. They were a couple of dirt bags, but good for a laugh too. For example the guitarist jerked off every night in front of a Jesus statue. He just loved doing that!

Frank: No, it was between him and Jesus, but he did it in the van as well. Their bass player, Ruud van Buuren, was a pretty clean dude who couldn’t take it any longer! It gave him an ulcer. So that’s when I filled in for him a while.


They also terrorised their manager. They sprayed his bald head with whipped cream or threw a blanket over his head while he was driving and shouted, “Hugo, where are we?” Screeching brakes, of course, and Hugo cursing: “You fucking assholes I’ve had it! I quit!”


One night on the road, it was snowing like hell, their singer, Peter Sjardin, had to piss. So he jumped out of the car naked, with just a pair of cowboy boots on, ran towards a parked car with people in it and started pissing against the hood. The


driver panicked! He put the car in reverse and tried to speed away, but the wheels kept on spinning because of the snow. That was awesome!

The well-mannered Dutch beat bands did their utmost to keep relations with the record companies at their best. Not the members of Q65 though. They’ve got a healthy aversion towards the industry types.
