Advertising Deadlines: The deadline for the February issue is 14 January. The deadline for the March issue is 15 February.

What an interesting past month. Once the last issue was completed Rachel and I started to put together a photographic book on Maine lobster boat racing. They had con- tacted us about doing a book on Maine ship and boat builders, this would have taken a lot of time to put together so I suggested one lobster boat race. We sent them a sample of what we planned to do and they said they would do it. I went through the over 35,000 images I have taken over the last 23 years sorting out the best photographs we had of lobster boat racing. One thing that was obvi- ous was that I did not take a lot of photo- graphs of the people and in retrospect that was a huge mistake. I was hoping to use the scans supplied by Bangor Photo, but the publisher wanted them at different param- eters. The scanner we had would not give us the quality we were looking for, but fortu- nately we were able to scan them at the Penobscot Marine Museum in Searsport. Initially we were going to go from negatives, but that did not work as well as thought so we switched to scanning the prints, which in the early years were black and white and later colour. We scanned over 275 images and then I began writing the introduction, brief chapters and then the over 200 captions. Initially the deadline was the second week in December, but we needed and were given a week extension. There were some trying times, but we finally did get it done. The following day we received a call that the publisher was worried that it was too techni- cal because the book was mostly photo- graphs of boats. All of the books that they have published in the past are comprised of generalized history photographs. Their

worry was about marketing the book, since this is not one of their typical books and could not be marketed the same way. We explained to them where the market was and gave them the contacts. At this point we are on hold, but I do feel confident that they will go forward with the project. Hopefully this will not delay having it for the Maine Fisherman’s Forum or the Maine Boatbuilder’s Show in March. The amount of time that was spent put- ting this book together caused us to delay the printing of this issue until after the holidays. I also had hoped that I could do a couple of interviews between Christmas and New Year’s. I should have known better since most people take those days off. I think one of the most important aspects of this paper is the interviews that we do. One, they are enjoyable reading but more importantly they are documentation of our history. Sometimes it’s tough to balance the editorial content. In this issue I ran a couple of articles on the Canadian fisheries, some yachting news and several articles regarding Navy news. These are articles not normally seen in the general press, but ones that are important to those who want to stay in the know. Trying to fit all the articles that should be in a publication such as this is sometimes challenging, but we try to give the reader the news he is more apt to be interested in.

I did make a couple of long runs between the holidays. I made a run all the way to Mattapoisett, Massachusetts to wish my mother a happy 80th

birthday. My sister and
