FOR LOVE OF COUNTRY A Novel by William C. Hammond For Love of Country is the second novel of the early American republic from William Hammond. Set in the early 1780s in the years following the American Revolution, it features the adventures of the seafaring Cutler family of Hingham, Massachusetts, and the supporting cast from the first novel of the series, A Matter of Honor. For Love of Country offers an exciting look at life in the young republic, a time when America remained a weak nation with no navy to protect its prosperous merchant fleet from Barbary pirates and European nations intent on crippling its shipping. The novel opens with the capture of the Cutler merchant brig Eagle by Barbary pirates. Young Caleb Cutler and his shipmates are taken as prisoners to Algiers. Richard Cutler is sent to North Africa to pay

Line Honours for Berenice in ARC Continued from Page 18.

The Swan 80’s performance orientated hull with T shaped bulb keel and deep balanced rudder ensure responsive manoeuvrability in big sea conditions. The hull is foam-cored and carbon-fibre reinforced in construction using the pre- preg lay up. This ensures a stiff laminate with excellent strength and fatigue properties so important for peace of mind in off shore racing.

Berenice’s owner, Marco Rodolfi, enjoyed a high profile ARC finish streaming into Rodney Bay under full main and spinnaker from the North West corner of the island. The Swan 80 pulled out a lead to the line once the trade winds established themselves in the latter stages of the crossing. With a main sail of 188 metres squared Berenice is a veritable powerhouse once sailing adding to the performance orientation of this model.

Rodolfi was particularly pleased to come through this year’s challenging ARC

the ransom demanded by the Dey of Algiers to free his brother and the others. After the dey rejects the ransom, Richard must defend his family’s fortune from Algerian pirates who try to take it by force. Victorious in a fierce battle at sea, Richard travels to Paris to report to John Paul Jones, his former naval commander, who will serve as America’s emissary to the Barbary States. In Paris, amid the tumult of the French Revolution, Richard engages in a desperate attempt to save his former lover, the beautiful Anne-Marie Helvétian, and her two daughters from the guillotine. The author’s careful historical research and thorough knowledge of sailing and the ways of the sea bring authenticity to the novel without detracting from the entertaining storyline. Hammond’s focus on the American perspective of the Age of

Fighting Sail in the years following the American Revolution adds a fresh dimension to historical novels of the period. William C. Hammond is a novelist, literary agent, and business consultant. A lifelong student of history and a sailing enthusiast, he frequently sails on Lake Superior and off the coast of New England. He lives with his family in Minneapolis, MN. His first novel in the Cutler chronicles, A Matter of Honor, was published in 2007. “A rollicking good read full of battles, glory, and high seas adventure, all firmly rooted in this nation’s maritime history, which the author knows and portrays well.” — James L. Nelson, author of George Washington’s Secret Navy

without any major boat damage. Commenting on his win over the water Rodolfi said, ‘we had some tough conditions, with 6 hours of 35 to 40 knots early on in the trip, but the last three days have been fantastic downwind sailing. We are all very pleased to be here in Saint Lucia.’ An armada of the local boats made the trip out greet the Italian Swan crew in Rodney Bay and were welcomed onto the dock with gifts of local produce and ice cold rum punches. The Swan speedsters will now have a much deserved rest and will look forward to enjoying the warm hospitality of this Caribbean island as the rest of the ARC fleet flood in to join them.
