Hey Shindiggers! It was interesting to read Miss Claudia’s report of the Blast Off garage festival in Nottingham, in the latest issue. But I do think it’s a bit skewed to report only one night of the whole weekend, as this gave a somewhat lopsided view of the proceedings. It’s a real pity all three nights weren’t covered, as many true highlights of the weekend, which started on the Thursday night, and stretched into the wee wee hours of Saturday/Sunday, were completely missed out. I did offer to write the Shindig! review of this debut

Blast Off soiree, but was told you already had it covered? Well, not quite eh! Anyway it’s not sour grapes that has prompted me to write this letter I assure you, nor do I want to belittle the writer’s efforts, it’s just that being there for the whole weekend myself, I feel an opportunity to properly cover it was missed in the one night review. Finally, I’d like to point out a couple of important

things to our readers; it’s actually only one of The Thanes that plays in Les Bof! these days, lead guitarist Angus McPake; and, woooo-ooooops!!! the group that Saturday’s headliners The Ghastly Ones played tribute to wasn’t The Sonics at all, as stated in the report, but actually the rather wonderful, contemporary English beat gents The Masonics, whose ‘I’ve Only Got Myself To Blame’ the Ghastlies loudly championed. Well, perhaps on the night in question Miss Claudia had a few more of these cocktails she talks about in her review than she, hic, thought she had. It was indeed a most fun, pretty crazy rock ‘n’ roll weekend. Here’s hoping it comes around again and again. Lenny Helsing

Dear Jon Just came across an interesting interview with Giorgio Gomelski (from November 1973) regarding his time managing Brian Auger & Julie Driscoll and running Marmalade. Seeing as Auger gives him a good kicking in your

Shindig! article I thought maybe GG should have his ‘say’ ;-) Here’re a few tasty quotes: “Julie Driscoll was one of the girls who used to come

to the clubs. She was 15 and one day I gave her a lift home and I turn the radio on and she starts to sing along with the radio. I said ‘Hey Julie, you’ve got a fantastic ear. You’re dead in tune.’ And she said ‘I told you I wanted to be a singer.’ She was singing with her father’s band in Murray’s Cabaret Club. “Brian was managed by Alan Bates. I didn’t want to

manage Brian Auger. He had a week in a club and had sold his Lesley speaker. He needed £500 to get a new one and he rang me up at 5PM and said he was playing that night. So I gave him a cheque to get his Lesley, and he played that night. “I do have intense relationships with people and I get

impatient probably with the rock lifestyle of musicians. The price is so high and the issue so important in terms of communication. I didn’t want to be a spoilsport but if you are in charge you see much further than the moment. “I gave artists £200 a week to live on and put them

into the studios. The artist is king and my dream was to develop their talents, but I became disillusioned and it all got too much in the end. My personal life was in schtook so one day I went off to France and never came back.” Mick Capewell Thanks for setting the record straight Mick.

Dear Jon, Usually when magazine editors announce changes, it means diminished quality and fewer pages, and I let my subscription lapse. What a wonderful surprise to get the latest issue of Shindig!, and see that you have truly enhanced an already wonderful magazine. The articles are always thorough and well written, and the reviews hit on all the eclectic styles of music that simply don’t get covered elsewhere. The CD is good, too. I’m happy to hear that others are subscribing and filling newsstands with Shindig! You are filling a niche for us readers, and I’m grateful to you and the other writers. Here’s to looking forward to a renewed subscription and enjoyment of many issues to come. Dinah Dale Oh gee… we try our best to provide a service. And we are so pleased that a) you are happy and b) that we are getting through to the public.

Hey Shindig! I’m a long-time subscriber from the States, and I love the new layout (plus CD). I especially enjoy your style and breadth of coverage – whoda thunk Brinsley Schwarz on the cover – any cover –in 2009? Fearless! Any mag that covers H.P Lovecraft, Spirit, and ? & The Mysterians in the space of a few issues earns my undying respect. Now, if only we can get a cover story on Silverhead, Sir Lord Baltimore, Captain Beyond, Eddie & The Hot Rods, Flanders &Swann...why not comedy? Pat Dull

Hi Jon & Andy I have bought every issue of Shindig! since the launch of volume 2 (and the first Annual) and I am always amazed by the quality, depth and passion you guys put into every single page of what has become my favourite music mag... I love the new cover design but you really surpassed yourselves with the content and raised the bar with the CD. I have to hang my head in shame and admit I had heard nothing by any of the featured bands but the sample tracks made me want to rush out and buy a load of their albums! How about a Scott Walker feature? Bri Davies We hear ya Pa and Bri… we hear ya …and thanks for the kind comments. We’re making great waves and it really does appear that many people appreciate the finer things in life. A number of Pat’s requests are lined up to be covered, and we may well cover Scott sometime down the line.

Dear Jon and Andy, I must admit that I had some doubts that it would be possible to maintain the high quality of the first issue... but you’ve made it two years on. This last issue was, in my opinion, your best issue yet. The reviews are amazing and the Kim Fowley piece is unforgettable... I’ve been waiting for it for a long time... thank you! And the Spirit retrospective... long awaited as well! Please consider doing something on David Ackles – I’ve been waiting for an in depth article on him for a long time. Terrascope interviewed him a long time ago, and that was s a revelation. Nuno Robles A David Ackles piece is scheduled to run in 2010. We aim to please.
