Introduction

For years, Citrix Secure Gateway has been included as a component of Citrix®

XenApp™

in a Citrix environment. With the recent changes to Citrix® pricing and offerings, XenApp and Citrix®

XenDesktop™

and is the most commonly deployed remote access method Access Gateway™

administrators

have new, more cost-effective options for providing secure access to applications and desktops that also extends functionality over Secure Gateway. These changes include:

— Citrix® Access Gateway™ VPX − A virtual appliance that

delivers the same features and functionality as the Model 2010 physical appliance. Customers may deploy Access Gateway VPX as a virtual workload on their own server hardware from vendors such as Hewlett Packard, IBM, or Dell. Access Gateway VPX is now available to serve as a direct replacement for Secure Gateway, and provides additional capabilities that improve support for Citrix Receiver™

, Citrix Merchandising Server™ , and Dazzle™ .

— Secure access to XenApp and XenDesktop included with all appliances – Access Gateway appliances now include secure access to XenApp and XenDesktop at no additional cost. New physical and virtual appliances no longer require separately purchased user licenses to enable this functionality.

Together, these changes make Access Gateway the ideal replacement by giving secure access options that reduce the total cost of ownership by over 50 percent compared to Secure Gateway.

Why deploy Access Gateway appliances in place of a Secure Gateway?

Access Gateway is available as both virtual and physical appliances—both of which are purpose-built and provide secure access designed to prevent unauthorized access to sensitive corporate data. All Access Gateway appliances are fully integrated and pre-hardened, making them subject to few—if any— security patches typically associated with a generalized operating system like Microsoft®

Windows Server® or commercial Linux distributions.

Unfortunately, security best practices require timely review and application of patch packages when they are released to ensure data protection. Administrators have three options:

1. Do nothing and risk a security breach

2. Deploy Secure Gateway on Microsoft Windows Server and review, test, and apply monthly patch releases (as well as periodic urgent security patches) to the system
