Welcome
Editor’sdesk Year to forget?
with Bruce Oxley
How will you remember 2010? Will it be memories of bail-outs, budgets and blundering politicians, or will you be able to find a silver lining in what has been an annus horribilis for many dental practitioners?
Personally, I seem to have used this column to talk more about economics over the past 12 months than dentistry. Something that, unfortunately, I don’t see changing any time soon. With a new budget to digest – described by the IDAon page 7 as
“cynical” and “inexcusable” – I fear that money, or a lack of it, will be on the news agenda for some time. And, while it doesn’t come naturally for me to find any sympathy for our beleagured Health Minister Mary Harney, we have to face facts. The country is in a dire economic situation and the current administration had to try and find a way out of the hole, regardless of whether they dug it themselves.

a date for the general election may well have been announced and the country will get the chance to boot the current administration into touch. However, if this happens – and it is fairly certain it will – let’s not be under any illusions that the new mob will be able to wave a magic wand and get the Celtic Tiger back on its feet. Not yet anyway.
