AMEA 2011 Clinicians and Performers
Karen Medley is an elementary music specialist in the Pentucket Regional School District in northeastern Massachusetts. Formerly a teacher in the Clark County Schools, Las Vegas, Nevada and a teacher in the Memphis City Schools for over twenty years, she received her BME from the Eastman School of Music (University of Rochester). She also studied at theUniversity ofMemphiswhere she earned aMaster ofMusic with a Concentration in Orff Studies and completed her Orff Teacher Training Level I –III andMaster Class. Presenter at elevenAOSANational Conferences, Karen has taught many workshops, in-services and teacher training courses across the United States, including workshops in Oahu and Maui. Currently, Karen teaches in summer teacher-training programs through the University ofAlaska (Anchorage), UNLV(LasVegas, NV) and the Eastman School ofMusic. Arecipient of the RotaryAward for Teacher Excellence inMemphis City Schools (1984), a contributing writer for Music and You (Macmillan/McGraw-Hill), Karen’s arrangements have been featured in TheWorld Sings: International Folk Songs (Memphis Musicraft Pub.) and Las Vegas
Writes III. Karen served on the AOSA National Board of Trustees from 1987-2001 as Regional Representative for two terms and also as National Conference Chairperson for the 1994, 1996, and 2000 AOSA National Conference. Karen recently served on the AOSA National Board of Trustees and was the National Conference Chairperson for the 2007 AOSA Conference in San Jose, California.
The Hillcrest-Duncanville Middle School Band is made up of approximately 85 seventh and eighth graderswho have had at least one year of prior band instruction. They have consistently earned superior ratings at the district and state levels. In 2010 they earned superior ratings and Best in Class at Florida’s Festival of Champions. In 2008 they earned a silvermedal at FestivalDisney. At least fifty percent of the band is involved in Solo and Ensemble and honor bands each year, including theAlabamaAll-State Band.
Ken McGuire is an Associate Professor of Music Education in the School of Music at The University of Alabama where he teaches courses on music education methodology, assessment, philosophy, and history. He earned degrees from Syracuse University, and the State Universities of New York at Fredonia and Binghamton. Prior to his appointment atAlabama,Dr.McGuire taught general and choralmusic inNewYork State public schools for ten years. He has presented original research and ideas at numerous workshops and conferences, and has had articles published in Journal of Research in Music Education, Journal of Music Therapy, International Journal for Mathematics Teaching and Learning, Southeastern Journal of Research inMusic Education,Music Educators Journal, TeachingMusic, and Ala Breve.Dr.McGuire has servedMusic EducatorsNational Conference,AlabamaMusic EducatorsAssociation,Alabama State EducationDepartment, and local arts advocacy groups in multiple leadership roles.
Marvin E. Latimer Jr.
is currentlyAssistant Professor ofMusic Education and Director of the University Chorus at the University of Alabama. He received a BME and MME fromWichita State University and a PhD in Music Education with honors from the University of Kansas. Dr. Latimer taught secondary choral music inWichita, Kansas and served as Assistant Professor of Music Education and Director of the Women’s Ensemble at Wichita StateUniversity prior to his appointment atAlabama. In addition to hiswork in education, he has been active as Church Choir Director, Community Choir Director, Performer, Music Theater Director and Producer, TechnicalDirector, and ScenicDesigner. Dr. Latimer has published research in Choral Journal, Contributions to Music Education, International Journal for Research in Choral Singing, Journal of Research in Music Education, and Journal of Historical Research inMusic Education. His professional distinctions consist of numerous state, national, and international choral convention presentations and performances. He serves on theAlabamaACDAState Board and is the Organizational History Subcommittee Chair of theACDAResearch and Publications Committee.
