Yanta Hay!” CONGRATLATIONS LAURIE VIRKSTIS! “We want AGOUTI LIMITS BLACK TO THE POINTS color wheel with prism

Dear Prism, I have a paint sorrel

& white tobiano mare. If I breed her to a black & white tobiano homozygous stud what color should I get? Thanks, Cheryl. Submitted via HorseGazette. com

Dear Cheryl, Since Red (Sorrel/

Chestnut) and Black are base colors you are crossing the two base colors. The only color modifier that could be present is Agouti in the Sorrel mare. Agouti limits black to the “points” so a ‘Red horse could carry Agouti and never give any visible evidence of it being there. If the stallion carried it, he would be a bay and not a black.

tor would be the Black Status (Homozygous for black) of the stallion. Your foal color could be Sorrel, Black or Bay. As far as the Tobiano pattern – if one parent is homozygous for Tobiano the foal is guaranteed to be a Tobiano. If both parents are heterozygous for Tobiano then you would have (approxi- mately) a 25% chance of homo- zygous Tobiano, 50% chance of heterozygous Tobiano and 25% chance of a non-Tobiano solid. - Prism

Dear Prism, I have a dapple gray

Another fac-

mare that I’m thinking about breeding to a black and white spotted stallion, what do you think I will get? Thanks, Me- lissa. Submitted via Horse Gazette.com.

Dear Melissa, That is difficult to

pinpoint because technically Gray is not a color but a color modifier. Not knowing the birth color of the mare I’m go- ing to make a broad assessment that you could get a Sorrel, Black or bay with a 50% chance of being spotted. - Prism

Dear Prism,

have the best opportunity that results in a buckskin foal? Thanks, Jim Edwards. Submit- ted via HorseGazette.com

Dear Jim,

skin and “reverse engineer” the color. Buckskin is a Bay horse with one copy of the dilute/cream gene. Taking that information a step further if a Bay horse has two dilute/cream genes (homozygous for dilute/ cream) it is a Perlino. The BEST chance of producing a Buckskin foal would be to find a Perlino that is homozygous for Agouti (limits the black color to the points) and cross on a horse which is homozygous

Let’s start with Buck- What 2 colors would

for black. That formula would guarantee you a buckskin foal every time. - Prism

Dear Prism, I have a sorrel mare

that I bred to a Light Palomino stud. What color chances does the colt have? Jessica – submit- ted via HorseGazette.com

Dear Jessica, Since both Sorrel

and Palomino are red based and since all red horses are ho- mozygous for red, the resulting foal would be either Sorrel or Palomino. - Prism

Dear Prism, I have a red sorrel

mare that was bred to a grey stallion. The stallions sire was sorrel and the dam was grey by a bay stallion. The newborn foal appears bay. What is the likelihood that the foal will turn grey. - Kelsy Kohagura, sub- mitted via HorseGazette.com

Dear Kelsy, Since we know the

stallion had a non-gray sire and is heterozygous for gray your odds on the resulting foal are 50% for it to turn gray. - Prism
